Q: USB 3.0 problems on Macbook Pro

I have a Toshiba external USB 3.0 disk and I found out there's some problems with USB 3.0 in latest Macs. Even with an USB 2.0 cable it didn't worked! After the update of July 18th It was finally detected in USB 2.0 mode and I finally made a Time Machine backup! Today the disk is not detectable again (sometimes even the light, of the hdd, doesn't powers on)!!

After several disconects and connects of the disk trying to make it work the BT, touchpad and keyboard stopped to work but strangelly the usb mouse worked fine (funny ain't it?) and I had to reboot my mac. But still the HDD is not working even with the USB 2.0 cable!!

Hey Apple! Please fix the USB 3.0 issues!!! I'm thinking on return it to the shop because it was the USB 3.0 that made me want this!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.4)

You should take your computer in for assessment or return it. You don't say what model and year Macbook Pro you have but my rMBP has no problems with external USB 3.0 hard drives or USB 3.0 Flash drives.

Try another USB 3.0 device like a USB Flash drive or different hard drive.

I don't know any MBP with USB 3.0 support then the latest models! Although I can be more especific and say that mine is the MBP 13".

And if you search about it you notice that MANY users are expirience problems with the USB 3.0 ports on the latest MBP (with or without retina) or MBA!

Toshiba Carvio external USB 3.0 HDD devices have a well known problem with the latest MBP. I have a 'bigger' problem with it because sadly even with a USB 2.0 cable it DOES NOT WORK! Although worked once or twice!?

I will try with another device, but USB 3.0 devices are a bit expensive to be 'easy' to test several devices!

Bob's just trying to make sure your model has USB 3.0 functionality since many times people come on here asking why something doesn't work on their computer when its technically not even possible. I saw one post of a person asking why there USB 3.0 isn't working on their MBP from 2010, which isn't possible. They thought the new OS gave them USB 3.0. So, I think Bob was just making sure it wasn't a situation like that since you didn't list your model or year.

I think I was clear in the last post that was the latest model (13-inch, Mid 2012). Although I wouldn't post a message of a functionality that wasn't supported by my hardware I understand that someone could confuse software and hardware and make that mistake. It's funny but in my MBP with USB 2.0 the HDD worked fine :-p

The main reason that I'm replying is because I bought a new USB 3.0 and worked fine. Like I said before there is a known problem with Toshiba Carvio and Toshiba accepted my claim and replaced my disk. So, anyone that has a problem with USB 3.0 please check if the HDD is the problem (google it?).

I also experienced several issues with all USB devices (ie: external mouse) disconnecting but I think that's OK now without any 'tweeks'. The only complain I have is that Mac OS X does not support read/write support out of the box for some filesystems (ie: NTFS, EXT3/4, etc) but that is another issue :-)

    FIXED!

Ok so I have a NEW NON-Retina MAcbookPro 13 inch.

My mac froze and I had no USB support, so I downloaded and installed this:

    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1542

and now it is all working 100% so far. My USB 3 Drive and my USB Mouse is working, and no more freezing!

    Yay!

There are NTFS drivers available commercially, e.g. Paragon NTFS, which is provided free with some Seagate products. I have a GoFlex USB3.0 disk, formatted to NTFS and running perfectly...with the included driver!

Did you read "out of the box"? I know there's thirdpaty tools like the one that provided in my Seagate HDD (only works on Seagate disks by the way). I paid for having Paragon NTFS in full and not only for Seagate HDDs. But thanks anyway.

I was talking on having support for some other FS without having to pay for it (I know about ntfs-3g)! My point is simple, and shouldn't be in this discussion but, if apple says that it's the best OS then it should have support (R/W) for the common FS in HDDs that we use at home like the ones we  plug in to the a Smart TV or Multimedia Player. Of couse if I use Apple TV and other products of apple everything works fine :-). But it was just a thought and a bit out of the main discussion here so please don't reply about FS support here and sorry for mentioned here.

I have a similar problem.  I got the 2012 15inch high-res (non-retina) MBP running Mountain Lion 10.8.2. I am experiencing a situation when a USB 3.0 device is plugged in, my USB mouse freezes or stutters however the trackpad works just fine. My Macbook recognizes the device and I am able to use it normally without my USB mouse.  I am using a Microsoft Explorer Touch Mouse.  I have also tried a logitech mouse and still the same. Once I unplug the USB 3.0 device or insert a USB 2.0 Device, the mouse resumes back to normal.  I tried downloading the http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1542 update but it says only 10.7 is supported. I am confused, do any of you know if there is a solution?
