Lots of ways.  Dropbox, Boxnet, 4shared, ... likely a hundred more.  Just google for free file sharing and you'll find options.

Do you mean you want someone to be able to access your Public folder without using a service like Dropbox?

Seems like a stupid question, but dropbox etc don't support large files except for a fee, so I wanted to know how another computer could "see" mine over the internet so file sharing would be available?  I don't know this can happen but I thought I would ask.  It actually doesn't seem like that far fetched an idea....maybe vcn client or something else might work.

Here is Apple's info on sharing - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1549?viewlocale=en_US

The network issues are something else again though.  You will be on your LAN so your worldly IP does not grant access directly, so you will need to configure ports on your router to allow access, and yes, you could use a VPN setup.

I guess how you want to set it up depends on who you are sharing with?  If it is a wide open audience, I would not want to open my network up like that and would fine a remotely hosted solution (I have a SFTP site with my domain host that I use sometimes for big files).  Plus securely sharing files from a host on my own LAN is more effort than I want to go through.

But TCP/IP over a VPN will work.
