Q: I have a Power Mac G4,450 dual, gigabit ethernet. Bought my son a 2nd-hand, 3rd gen iPod Touch, supposed to work w/ OS X.4.11, and iTunes 9, which I have. My iTunes won't recognize the Touch, says needs iTunes 10.5. Help?

today I bought a 3rd gen iPod Touch, second-hand, gift for my son. Packaging literature declares min requirements: OS 10.4.11, iTunes 9 or later. Got home, went to set it up on my G4, OS 10.4.11, with iTunes 9.2.1(5). My iTunes threw up a dialog box declaring that it could not recognize the iPod Touch, said that I need iTunes 10.5 to use this iPod.

Well, I can't get iTunes 10.5 (which doesn't seem to be available on the website, let alone can I use iTunes 10.6): it won't run on my OS.

I am reliably told that I can't upgrade my G4 OS beyond 10.4.11, that I might get OS 10.5 etc.

Has anyone any thoughts about this issue? Any tried and true guidelines for resolving my compatibility issues?

Thanks,

John

The previous owner probably upgraded the iPod to iOS 5, and that requires iTunes 10.x which will not run on a Mac with Mac OS X 10.4. Since there's no way to downgrade iOS on the iPod, you'll have to upgrade your PowerMac to 10.5. The system requirements:

Processor must be any Intel, PowerPC G5 or G4 (867 MHz and faster)

DVD drive (for installation of the operating system)

At least 512 MB of RAM (additional RAM (1 GB) is recommended for development purposes)

At least 9 GB of disk space available.

If your system qualifies, you can look for a retail copy of 10.5, though it's gotten pricey.

If you can't upgrade, you're stuck, I'm afraid.

    Regards.

If you call up the Apple on-line store they will sell you a copy of 10.5.8 for $129. You have to call since it is not listed in the on-line website.
