Lion keeping 80GB of local backups

Hi,

The other day I discovered that Lion is keeping local backups on my Harddrive and it is taking up a fair ammount of space. Any idea on how to disable this?

I keep backups on an external harddrive so I'm not sure why it is keeping this much locally. Does anyone know how I can get that space back?

OS X Lion- About Time Machine's "local snapshots" on portable Macs

Open the Terminal in the Utilities folder and enter or paste the appropriate command line. Press RETURN and enter your admin password when prompted. It will not be echoed.

To turn them ON: sudo tmutil enablelocal

To turn them OFF: sudo tmutil disablelocal

Note that turning them OFF will also delete all existing snapshots.
