I was on Facebook and deleting people from my friends list who are never active. When I was about done, the ticker on the upper right hand side just disappeared and I don't see how to get it back.
some friends said there should be a gray line up there with an arrow below it, but it is not there for me.

Not sure what you mean by the ticker.
If you are referring to Notifications, click the world icon to the right of facebook top left side of the window.
Try logging out of Facebook and logging back in. You may need to do that for those changes to take effect.
the Ticker is where the latest posts are showing up on the top right hand corner and there is an arrow you can clik to turn the ticker on or off but nothing like that is showing up for me there
This ticker is similar to Notifications and I do have that on the left side but the ticker is not there now.
Did you try signing out of Facebook and signing back in as I suggested before ??

If there aren't any friend requests, you won't see any notifications...
You are referrging to the dark blue icons just to the right of "facebook" ... correct?
Nothing to do with Friend Requests. Its a moving ticker that shows the latests posts by friends
You are on the left hand side by FACEBOOK and I am talking about the Ticker on the right hand side upper corner above the chat box and friend names to chat with.
This may be more of a Facebook issue than Safari...
Click the downward facing arrow to the right of Home then click Help.
I don't know if you've solved the problem now, but mine disappeared yesterday from Chrome too. It's there in the main window but not at the side as before, Chat is now down in the bottom right where it used to be before the ticker.
I've found if I pinch on the trackpad to make the text smaller it (eventually) appears again. I'm not sure if it's a bug with facebook or a setting we may have inadvertantly changed.
I'm pretty sure the ticker only shows up if there's enough room. Try maximizing you Safari window and you should then at least see the ticker pane drag bar and chat pane on the far right column.
If you don't have enough friend activity it will hide the ticker. You deleted friends and the ticker went away, that's because you don't have enough friends with activity to make the ticker work. I didn't have it for the longest time, I needed almost 100 to get it to appear.
