Look, I loved my MacBook Air, and my iPod, and my iTouch and my iPad.... but here is the deal: I have the answer, it will cost $800 to for a new computer screen. That is just for the "top deck", there is nothing wrong with the computer. $800? Seriously, the computer was only $1200. Come on people - how much can that part cost? The screen is only 13 inches--there is nothing about that part worth $800. The "Genius" apparently can't be trusted to do the repair, heck they can't even open the back of the case. They aren't allowed. The only thing a "Genius" is allowed to do is work on something with respect to the software. Here is the odd thing, before they can tell you anything, they need the serial number off of your computer so that they can put it into their system. The only thing they should need to give me a price is my Model #. That is just weird.

Did you know that Apple has a special screw for their computers that you need a special tool to open? I could go on - but what is the point? They may not be "screwing their customers" as you say, but they are indeed like a crack dealer. They supply you enough to get "hooked" on their product and things get a little more expensive when you come back for something a little different.

To those of you who want to partake in the crack, may I suggest what I will be doing from here on out... carry a personal articles rider on your homeowners or renters insurance. Apparently it is only about $40 and will cover the cost of repairs for accidental damage on listed belongings. Yes, I just learned a painful lesson!

Now that I think of it, they are screwing their customers. $800 for that part is price gouging. Ugh? Ticked that I like their product.

I know you are LONG past needing this information, but...

I replaced the glass and LCD on an 11" Macbook Air 2010 model. It took me about 3-4 hours and $200 to get it done. In the end I messed up the filter paper in one spot and got a light spot about 2 inches long near the middle of the screen. Also, glue holds the thing together. I felt like it would fall apart from just ambient heat after the repair.

I am very experienced in repairs and replacements of parts and components. I would NEVER suggest anyone try what I did. If you ever want to replace the screen on your macbook air, buy the whole top case. Yes, its a massive mark-up, but it's worth it, sadly. It takes less than 30 minutes to swap out that part and the risk of messing something up is very low.

I dont know if I am willing to own a computer with a top case that thin ever again. The thing is so fragile and so expensive and/or time consuming to fix. Either replace the top case or sell it to someone who will pay slightly more than market less the top case price if possible.

Thanks,

Steve

I am so disappointed with my macbook air. The thing was nearly 3000 bucks.

Crack dealing is correct. There are lots of examples of it. A product comes out is great.

Goes into supper production and quality slides, while price escalates. Stockholders love it.

When the stock crashes though, those boys are gone. While the faithful have gotten screwed.
I am writing this on a dell because my macbook screen is black.

How do think this will work out in the long run?

In Singapore, there are no official Apple Stores or Genius bars. Going to an Apple Authorised Service Provider will cost around $600 - $1K.

There are many independent Mac Repair shops. At Mac Plus, a Macbook Air 13" LCD replacement will be around half the price at $495 SGD. For Macbook Pro Retina LCD replacements, prices range from $600 - $750 depending on the inch.

My pristine MacBook Air 13" - 2012 model, was dropped yesterday by my dogs walking around and they tripped in the power cord. The stupid MagSafe was not "safe" at all...

So, now I have a corner of my display damaged. Everything else is fine, just a cosmetic damage. I am on an assignment in Rio de Janeiro and the cost to replace the entire display part, including of course, the case, is BRL 2.100, that translates to around US$ 672

:-(

I guess I will ask for a refund from my dogs......
