I am trying to configure an iPad to print via Airprint to a HP Laserjet Pro CP1225mw printer and are having problems

Currently I am able to print to the printer via Airprint but because the iPad has a priority of Wi-Fi over 3G, when I want to browse the Internet at the same time via the iPad's 3G connection it will not which makes it hard to print pages from websites. I have the option of adding the printer to the internal wireless network for the organization but I am trying to avoid it as iOS-based devices get constantly prompted for username and password when trying to authenticate HTTPS connections and this may prove an irritation for the user that is going to get this printer. Also I want to restrict who can access this printer as it is mean for use for one specific person in the organization.

One option would be to allow mDNS broadcasts only on the wi-fi controller associated with the access point closest to the user. This way, the printer availability wouldn't be broadcast widely, just to that access point. You could also give it a logical name which would identify it as the personal printer of the particular user. We looked at something similar for small Dr's offices.

Problem is that does not get around having to set up the iPad on the internal wireless network which was something I was trying to avoid due to the constant prompting for username and password when the iPad want to authenicate HTTPS connections (as per what is shown at https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3457661) as this would be fustrating for the senior executive in question.

Some printers support adhoc networks. This would keep it off your corporate net. Of course, I haven't tried this.

For example HP D110.

I don't know if this will help you or not but could be worth looking into.

"The xPrintServer-Network Edition is a 'plug-and-print' hardware print server for printing from Apple iOS devices running iOS version 4.2 or higher. The device is roughly the size of an iPhone and uses the iOS native print menu. It requires no additional applications, software downloads, or printer driver installations and automatically discovers available networked printers supporting JetDirect / AppSocket, LPD and IPP protocols."
