FACES transfer/move from ext hard drive to internal

I have SO many pictures! I kept them on an external hard drive because I simply didn't have enough room on the hard drive. I personally organized them into proper folders This organization actually occurred long before I became a Mac user. Now that I have a 750G internal hard drive, I want to bring them back to the internal drive. BUT-- I want to bring all the work I did with the faces on them. Am I out of luck?? Puh-lease give me a better solution than starting over with literally 1000's of faces!

What version of iPhoto?

Are you running a Managed or a Referenced Library?

A Managed Library, is the default setting, and iPhoto copies files into the iPhoto Library when Importing. The files are then stored in the Library package

A Referenced Library is when iPhoto is NOT copying the files into the iPhoto Library when importing because you made a change at iPhoto -> Preferences -> Advanced. (You unchecked the option to copy files into the Library on import) The files are then stored where ever you put them and not in the Library package. In this scenario you are responsible for the File Management.

Iphoto 11 version 9.2.3

So, apparently I am indeed using the "referenced library" as the "Copy items to the iPhoto Library" box is un-checked.

So that leads me to wonder if I have to manually do this all over again --- or if I can connect to the external hard drive and export the entire library (with face tags) and re-import to the new hard drive. In effect, going "back" to a managed library?

Do you have Aperture by any chance? If you have iPhoto 9.3 or later and Aperture 3.3 or later then you could open the Library with Aperture and use its Consolidate Masters command.

Next option: set iPhoto to Managed format and useiPhoto Library Manager's rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords nd faces back.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

Other than that - how are you at hacking SQL databases?
