Black Blotches at the bottom of the Screen. Is this normal?

Hi everyone,

I just bought my second defective 13 inch Macbook Air. Oh how fun. Anyhow must not complain too much otherwise the Apple people will remove this post too. Only this is not a Rant Apple I have questions.

Question (1) What do I do with a new 13 inch Macbook Air 256 GB, 4GB ram that has developed Ugly, disgusting Black Blotches on the bottom of the screen. Its just above the Macbook Air logo and can be clearly seen on a White background. Is this normal? Does Apple consider this to be a fault and will they replace it?

Question (2) How many people have the same problem with ugly, disgusting, black blotches on their new 2012 macbook air screen?

Thanks

MacBook Air, Mac OS X (10.7.4), Mid-2012

That is not normal. You take it to an Apple store or AASP for evaluation and see what they say.

I have now taken up this matter with the shop I bought the Macbook Air from. They have taken it back after a lot of back and forth and promised to issue me a new one as soon as stock becomes available. Since Apple does not have its own store in India we Apple customers have to deal with Resellers who are very reluctant to take the product back if a problem surfaces. Lesson learnt dont back Apple products in India.

This would be my third Macbook Air and we shall see how the screen quality compares on this one. I doubt that it would be perfect. I saw other Macbook Air screens in the Shop and each one of those had uneven backlight issues.

I have come to the conclusion that Macbook Air display is just not as good as the 13 inch Macbook Pro. Although both of them are using TN panel technology. Let us not even start talking about the 15 inch Macbook Pro that has an IPS panel.

I think the reason Macbook Air display is different is because of its thinness. 13 inch Macbook Pro display is much thicker as compared, hence I feel that they still need to perfect the technology. Unfortunalty that is the case with a lot of Apple products, the concept run much further than the design.

Got my replacement Macbook Air just the other day. Lets just say I got Lucky. No backlight bleeding, No Mura, No dark blotches/patches and no headlight effect. Howerver there is one fault and that is that the whites on the Macbook Air are very uneven. The left side of the screen is much darker than the right. Other than that this one is perfect. I shall be keeping it, becuase after reading thread after thread I have come to the conclusion that Apple is not really concerned with the Quality of Display it is putting inside the Macbook Air. Frankly its not meant for Graphics work, if you want that then go with a IPS display inside the 15 inch Macbook Pro. I love the design of the Macbook Air and its just a great light weight machine. When Apple finally put in the Retina Display on the Macbook Air it will be the perfect laptop. Very much looking forward to that day.

could you please explain what u mean by left side being darker then right ....on my new one the left corner at the bottom is brighter then right corner....on scrolling down in full screen mode , a slight difference in brightness at the left bottom corner(as compared to portion just above it) is there especially on light backgrounds... should i again be askin for the replacement.

If you put a pure white background on the screen and then observe the display from left to right I find slight discrepancy in the whites. The left side of the display instead of looking pure white looks slightly greyish. This could be becuase of the uneven backlighting i am not sure. You could ask for a replacement but I doubt you would find a perfect one. I have seen multiple Macbook Air screens and each one of those had some issue or other with the display. I would suggest you return it and go for a 13 inch Macbook Pro.
