Can't import video into iMovie

We got a MacBook Pro a few months ago. It's running OS 10.7.3. We launch iMovie, plug in the camcorder via the USB cable and nothing happens. iMovie is suppose to find the video camera and display an import window. But nothing happens and we've left it for nearly an hour!

We then tried File > Import from camera and it tries to take video from the built in camera. We left it for nearly an hour to see if it would detect the video camera but again it didn't.

The camera is a Canon Legria FS200

Any help would be great

Is your camera plugged into AC power (not batteries only)? You need to do that for the import to work.

Or if you don't want to plug in the camera, if it uses an SDHC card, you can plug the card into a USB card reader and that should work.

Are all card readers alike? My Panasonic uses SDHC cards, and I have a SanDisk USB card reader that's probably a few years old. Is there such a thing as USB-2 and USB-3 card readers, or is it all dependent on the card itself?

Some recent Macs have SD card readers built in. If yours does not, most USB card readers should work. Try it.

Hi

Thanks for you advise. I've checked and the camera does use a SD card and my laptop has a SD card slot. My Mac is currently importing my video - so thank you for your advise.
