If you have a backup, you can retrieve the camera roll pictures, app data and some other items. This will explain what is contained in the backup.

How wet did it get ? You should leave it so that it has a chance to completely dry out, which may be a number of days depending on how wet it got, before you try to use it (if you've already tried to turn it on then you may potentially have shorted it), and when it has dried out you can then try powering it on. Have you got any sachets of, for example, silica gel to place with it - they are often found in packaging and/or can be found in some camera stores.

If it does then power on then take a backup just in case it working is temporary. Otherwise have you got a recent backup ?

If you don't have silica gel, burying it in dry rice works just about as good.

The key is to NOT try to power it up or plug it in. THe innards are fairly stable, especially the drive. (I've washed flash drives and once they dry out, they work just fine). They key is to keep it powered down until it's dry. The water doesn't damage the device, rather short circuits caused by power being conducted by the water where it's not supposed to be.
