overheating of MacBook Pro

Hi, my Mac Book Pro is horribly ovearheating! I took it to the store and they checked it out, however, found no problem with it. I downloaded the iStat Pro, here are the numbers:

HD: 38 degrees

CPU: 93 degrees

Enclosure Base: 34 degrees

Enclosure Base 2: 34 degrees

Enclosure Base 3: 32 degrees

Heatsink B: 61 degrees

Mem Bank A1: 51 degrees

Fans, Exhaust: 6200rpm

The computer is boiling. I can't even touch it with bare hands and have to use pillow to lift it. What can I do? My mac is 11 months old and I do not use it more than for taking notes in the University, listening music on iTunes or watching movies on DVD's 😟

Pillow == bed => user manual indicates not to block the cooling vents on the back and to allow air to flow underneath. In other words, don't place on the fluffy bedspread, use it on a hard surface and/or get a laptop pad or stand underneath to enhance cooling. Decoding a DVD implies enough work to get the computer toasty if inadequately ventilated.

Actually, I hold my Mac on my laps on the sofa, and I'm using the pillows that are on the sofa to prevent from burning my laps/ fingers, my mac over heats that badly 😟 But it doesn't matter where I hold it. The numbers I posted were taken while I was in the cafe, holding my Mac on the coffee table and it was quite cold inside 😟

The link stedman1 provided above suggests using Application Monitor - this may help identify whether some unexpected process is contributing to the heat. Also, have you installed the recent update, which claims to address "increased CPU power consumption"?

EDIT: I see you have already run Application Monitor, so ignore that part of my post.

yeah, it is 13 😟

I rarely take laptop with me to bed and I have a small desk to hold it in the case (kind of breakfast-in-bed table 😝)

Is there is anything I can do on every day basis to cool it down? I hold a lot of vital documents and files from University. I'm scared one day it will just die on me and I loose everything. I bought mac cause I thought they are reliable. I'm taking my laptop for the lectures therefore I need something small to cool it down - and quiet. Oh, and my Mac runs very loudly too! I have an old Asus ( from 2003!!!) and it runs quieter than my Mac!

I can't close all of my processes over 10% as those are vital for my work (ie. Pages, Safari etc). It isn't right if I can't watch a video on youtube without over heating a laptop. I had 7 years an Asus and the only reason I replaced it was because I wanted something reliable for my University work. From all I gathered mac was the best choice, even though the most expensive. To think I paid £1000 for a piece of extremely overheating thing is making me right now furious! I can't even use it properly as I honestly got burned with it. It shouldn't be right that £250, 8 years old Asus works better than 11 months Mac 😟

Extremely dissapointed with it 😟

I tried to install the update you gave the link to, however, it states that "This software is nor supported on your system" 😟

Since it is approaching the end of its natural 12 month base warranty, a trip to the Store would be prudent. They don't charge for checking and if anything were to be awry, the warranty should take care. You should also do the numbers and consider whether or not to purchase the 2-year AppleCare warranty extension if you haven't already. It has to be activated before the base warranty runs out.

Since you are fortunately quite aware of the value of all the goodies you keep in your Mac, should also consider getting an external backup device. Buspowered external drives of massive capacity can be had for a song and can save your stuff should the worst come to pass. Holler back if you need guidance on how to get a proper backup done.

Edit: when having a browser running, be sure there are no hidden popup windows lurking in the back. Many shady sites do that and Flash content running in an unattended window or tab can really push the CPU into the hot zone. Same can be said of Dashboard widgets, since they're full fledged applications too; disable all that you don't use.

I have the extended warranty and I do have pen drive which holds my stuff. But if it die in the middle of my work, I will loose it anyways 😟 Songs are not a problem as I have ipod touch which holds them πŸ™‚

I've been in the store but they found nothing. I might have done mistake to bring my Mac just after deleting most - well eveything 😟 I was furious and deleted every thing from the laptop (priot backing it up of course).

I will try to contact with apple care - i bought that thing for a reason i guess πŸ™‚
