Macbooc Pro with SSD or normal HDD

Hello community,

In September I start to study web design & development and I would like to buy a Macbook Pro (13' 2.9 Ghz) for that.
I want to use the Macbook for programs like Photoshop and other programs that web designer use.

My question:
Which storage device should I order?

1 TB normal HDD (+$100) or 256 GB SSD (+$400) ?

Your help is very appreciated.

Regards,

Nico Dörr

PS: Sorry, my English is not so good. 😀

Nico,

Your English is just fine.

I have the Adobe CS6 Design & Web Premium package and I use a SSD. You'll likely use the same package, or perhaps even the Master Collection, on your new MacBook Pro.

On the 13" MBP you can install your own RAM and SSD. So for hard drive storage, I would buy the least expensive that there is because for $400 you can get a 512GB SSD rather than paying $400 for the Apple 256GB SSD.

SSD is definitely the way to go. And, right now, they don't get much larger than 512GB. Photoshop, Dreamweaver, etc., are all super-fast with the SSD I have (Crucial m4 512GB). There's no point in paying Apple's prices for a 256GB when you can get a 512GB for the same $400.

You will, of course, need an external drive for backup purposes. Since you have the option of Firewire 800 or USB 3.0, you might want to ask around here about which USB 3.0 drives are best and which work well with the 2012 models. There have been a number of posts here from users who have tried some models of Western Digital USB 3.0 external drives that have problems with the USB 3.0 ports in the 2012 models. While looking at the Apple Store I just noticed that they offer a "Seagate 1TB GoFlex Portable for Mac Thunderbolt Hard Drive" for $280. That's not a bad price, really - Amazon has the same for $271. I would love to have an external drive with that kind of speed!

You might also want to consider a larger monitor for you home studio use. I'm getting an Apple Thunderbolt Display, personally, but there are a number of displays much less expensive that some pros swear by - for recommendations for external monitors, I would suggest posting in the Adobe Photoshop users forum - http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop - there are thousands of pro users there who use Mac's with non-Apple displays.

Good luck - call back with any questions...
