ON turning on my new 160gb iPod classic, in settings it says I only have 148gb? My first iPod so apologies for being dim!

And your computer drive is the same way. For a 1TB drive, you only have about 940GB or so of space. It's all in how drives are marketed and how operating systems report the space. The space is still there and you didn't get cheated, it's just marketing.
