I can connect my tv to my macbook pro through a HDMI cable and the picture shows up perfectly. However, the sound goes through my laptop speakers and not through the tv. When I go into Preferences --> sound --> output, there is not option to select for the hdmi, just the internal speakers. How can I get the sound to go through the tv instead?

It also works if you press Option key with the volume button on the keyboard or you can go into the System Prefs and change the sound output preference. Disconnecting the HDMI cable returns the setting to default.

Oddly enough, what worked for me was plugging something into the headphone jack. I tried taking it out and the sound went back to laptop speakers. Plugged it back in, sound comes from TV.

I Use a "Behringer UCA202" usb audio device works great with an AV receiver 7.1 surround sound via toslink optical cable. Thx, dts , Dolby digital, pro logic, etc. they all work.

Rather than tacking onto a 4 year old thread it may be better to start your own thread which includes details of your problem and your setup.
I read all seven pages of this and still no success, until I realized I was usinh HDMI channel 2, and then I put the cable into the first port on the TV, set the "source" for that one on the TV remote control and magically (for why should it matter which HDMI port I was using?) the HDMI TV Samsung option appeared under sound options. Go figure.
