Mar 31, 2013 11:21 AM in response to MaxFSby andrewcashew,Hi MaxFS,
I was having the exact same problem as you and getting extremely frustrated that I could not play movies with sound simply through an HDMI cable on a new Retina Macbook Pro.
I have found one solution for some things.
First, download and install the VLC media player:
Once you have made sure you have the correct audio settings as seen above, open the VLC media player. One of the top drop down menus is labelled "Audio". Click this, go to "Audio Device" and select HDMI there.
That is currently working for me, and will hopefully enable you to at least watch some content this way!

Jun 1, 2013 7:55 PM in response to ashhhbeeby CourtB6,Nothing worked for mine. 13-Inch Late 2011 model. Ive tried it on 4 different tvs (samsung, element, vizio, panasonic) with 7 different cords of various types (standard, high speed, gold plated)...And nothing works. Even tried the above suggestions (Option+volume button). If anyone has anything else please let me know. I really want to connect my macbook to my TV and use it as a monitor while my macbook is mounted on my 12south stand!!!!!!

Jun 17, 2013 9:04 PM in response to CourtB6by tamaness,I just fixed this on my late-2011 13-inch Pro by restarting with the mini-DP-to-HDMI adapter plugged in, and my HDMI device turned on.

Jul 9, 2013 8:51 PM in response to ashhhbeeby Samslostit,After searching forever, this is what helped me after many days of being frustrated.
I have:
2011 Macbook Pro
3 week old Vizio 42" smart HDTV
15" HDMI to Thunderbolt cable off Amazon.
First the obvious:
System Pref - Display - Mirror, etc
Then in System Pref - Sound - Sound Effects, make sure that "Play sound effects through" is clicked on your tv. This didn't change until I went in and did it. This is what made it work for my tv. Then the obvious Output - HDMI.
Also go into Apps - Utilities - Audio MIDI setup, and make sure the HDMI is selected.

Sep 2, 2013 3:52 PM in response to ashhhbeeby Dooyum,I had the same problem and solved it by going to Applications > Utilities > Audio MIDI Setup.
Select the HDMI device in the left menu and change the "Format" option to 41000.00Hz.
This worked for me, hopefully it'll work for you too.

Oct 29, 2013 5:38 AM in response to ashhhbeeby lapakc,I have a thunderbolt adapter and hdmi cord and my computer displays on the TV but not the audio. What cord do i use to connect my vizio TV (at least 5 years old) to my new macbook pro retina?
I used just an HDMI cord from my TV to my laptop and i still have no sound. I even tried an audio cord that goes from my computer to the L and R audio on the TV.
Any other suggestions? I have also gone to utilities> Audio MDI setup> and tried to alter the input output format but still no sound. Also tried the TV settings, still no luck.
Is there an audio cord that connects to the TV that would work so I dont have to listen through computer speakers
Help!

Nov 1, 2013 6:21 AM in response to ashhhbeeby TPBadam,Make sure to unplug anything out of your headphone jack. I did this as a last resort, and the audio via HDMI turned on like magic.

Nov 30, 2013 8:23 AM in response to ashhhbeeby charlierose73,I have a 2011 13" MacBook Pro and I can't even get my TV to show up, so none of the options above work.
Does anyone know why the TV wouldn't even show up, I've tried it on two TV's and although I get the mirror display of my MacBook, I just can't get sound...
Please someone help...
I have Toshiba and or John Lewis TV, both of which are not that old...
I am using a gold HDMI lead with an adapter
So frustrated now.
