No utilities folder on new iPhone 4s

There is no "utilities" folder on an iPhone, not unless you created a folder with that name. There is also no contacts folder. There is a contacts app which contains the contacts you enter manually or by sync'ing with your computer (or iCloud if you already had an iPhone previously and used iCloud to backup contacts).

There really are no user browsable folders or anything like them on an iPhone. Apps are compartmentalized and store their data & files within the app bundle itself. You can only browse those files or contents from within the app that contains them. It has no user interfaced file/folder structure like a computer.

The only folders you can create are ones to group apps together to help organize your various screens and space (which you make by pressing and holding an app icon until it wiggles and a red "-' shows up, then drag that app icon on top of another one you wish to group it with and the system will create a folder with those apps now in it).

There is a default folder on the iPhone called "Utilities". It includes Clock, Calculator, Compass, Voice Memos and Contacts if I recall correctly.

Sorry, I've never seen any such folder on my iPhone(s). Those apps were just out by themselves on my home screen on any new iPhone I've had or with any iOS upgrade I've installed. But, my memory may be fuzzy too.

It's realtively recent. When people started buying the 4S, there was a rash of "I have no Contacts" app posts because it was in the Utility folder. That's the only reason I know. I just always acess it through the Phone app or Siri.

I've had it on my 3GS for quite some time. I believe it came with iOS version 4.0. As stated, the OS places the calculator, clock and some other apps in there. I've put a few apps that I rarely use such as maps in there as well. Resetting home screen layout will give you the folder back.
