Q: Installing Canon SELPHY CP780/790 driver in Mountain Lion

Hey there,

I just figured out a way to install the new Canon SELPHY CP780 driver from the Canon site in Mountain Lion. This driver from March 2012 doesn't install on OS X 10.8 so you need to fiddle with the installer package.

Here are the steps to install this printer driver on Mountain Lion:

1) Go to http://pdisp01.c-wss.com/gdl/WWUFORedirectTarget.do?id=MDEwMDAwNDIwNDAx&cmp=ABR& lang=EN and download the printer driver

2) Double click the cp780-790os-x-06.dmg file

3) Open a new Finder window so you can see the new device "cp780-790os-x-06" in the sidebar.

4) Open the device by clicking it

5) Copy the file "SELPHY CP series Printer driver_6.0.0.21.mpkg" to your desktop by dragging it with the left mouse button.

6) Click the file "SELPHY CP series Printer driver_6.0.0.21.mpkg" on your desktop with the right mouse button and chose "Show contents"

7) Double click the directory "Contents" in the new Finder window

8) Right click "distribution.dist" and chose "Open with.."->TextEdit

9) Change the first function "installationCheck() so it looks like this:

function installationCheck() {

  return true;

}

10) Press CMD-S to save the changes.

11) Double click the file "SELPHY CP series Printer driver_6.0.0.21.mpkg" on your desktop to execute it

The installation should work now.

HTH somebody!

    murfmagic,

    I'm a new mac user too, so I can't be of much help...but Canon doesn't have a driver for this printer on Windows 8 or 8.1 either. So shame on Canon.  I could only speculate to try cancelling all the failed print jobs, deleting the printer, then re-downloading the printer drivers, trying a couple different versions.  I used cp530-760-770os-x-06.dmg which is a different version that mentioned by mviciousvex and macrednow. Good luck.

    Thanks for the reply...I've decided to give up trying to get it to print from the Mac and use the laptop my husband got at Christmans and print form there instead. I'll just have to be careful when I buy anything for the computer to make sure it's compatable with Mac.

    Dear viciousvex

    Excellent !!

    It works without hitch for Selphy 760 in Mavericks as well.

    The only problem which I have noted is that the images get printed with a bias of -15% brightness. So while printing if this corrected, the prints come out OK. Perhaps the driver is optimised for color matching in OS X 10.6 and not for other OS X versions.

    The best part is that my old Selphy printer is now productive again !

    Thanks

    I tried the above solution but had issues with printing from iPhoto.  Also tried one which required downloading another program from the Apple Development site and that would freeze in the middle of printing.  Spent all day trying to figure this out for my Selphy CP760.  Thanks to kt3806st, my Selphy CP760 is now working perfectly in Mavericks and took no more than 5 minutes and that was bc of I rebooted:

    Just follow all of the steps from kt380st (a total of 3). I made only one change to the suggestion in the link which was I downloaded CP900 driver frchose that upon rebooting instead of the CP800 driver.  For some reason, the CP800 driver still gave me a few issues.  Also, if you are anything like me, I have used so many printers so chose the Canon CP900 driver and not all of the others that say Canon CP900 with variations The driver version is 6.3.0.2 once installed.

    Brilliant! After having almost chucked my Selphy in the bin and taken a hammer to my macbook Pro , I can gladly report that my murderous impulses have ebbed away as I can print again! Muchos gracias!

    I have a CP510 and asked Canon for drivers to support Apple Mavericks. They have no driver and no plans to develop one. Their solution was to buy a new printer from them at a reduced price.

    I will NEVER buy another Canon product with support like that. HP and other have drivers that support Mavericks and care about their customers. canon doesn't seem to care - so I don't care about them now.

    BTW, I got the Guterprint driver and it works. This tells me it can be done if you want to. Looks like Canon doesn't want to.

    Anyone care to comment?

    I would take the offer and buy at reduced price. Sell it later, give it away or keep for yourself. Such offer doesn't come twice.

    I would not switch to HP. As a standalone photo printer Canon is great. I doubt the print quality can be matched.

    That's what I think.

    If you're on OS X Mavericks you should download Gutenprint v5.2.9 from Sourceforge.net . Set your printer option to Selphy CP770. As a result, I've printed out lots of photos from my Selphy CP780. Hope this works for you too.

    I don't recall exactly what was supported with Gutenprint 5.2.9, but there is improved support in Gutenprint 5.2.10a which can be found at http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/MacOSX.php  Improved support for additional dye sub printers and quality of output.

    Thank you so much for these instructions.  I can finally print to my Selphy CP780 from my iMac (OS X 10.9.5).  I was about to sell the printer; sure glad I tried one more time to make it work!!!
