imac(snow leopard) gets stuck while browsing with chrome

my imac(snow leopard) is occassionaly freezing and i cannot do anything even force quit..eventually i am forced to shut down the system by the hardware button... it is happening while i am browsing with crome browser... how to detect and solve this issue. i have also avast antivirus running in the background
