Battery life dropped considerably on Mountain Lion.

I upgraded to mountail Lion and now my battery life is about half of what it was before upgrading. Shouldn't the update improve battery life? Also, what can I do about this?

Anyway, this Retina MBP + Mountain Lion = many problems. I have just changed from PC world to Mac, looking for the satbility and the 0 default image, I am a bit surprised and disappointed. Because apart this battery issue, you have the screen burn-in issue (not for all fortunately) and the WiFi issue (I have this one too 😟

Waiting for 10.8.3 or 4 or 5 ;--))

Understood, however my advice has and continues to be...if your MacBook is under warranty (and often even if it's not) and it isn't performing to spec, take it back. There are millions of MacBooks out there that work fine. If you have one that doesn't you shouldn't settle or wait for an update. No mattery what an Apple employee tells you initially, politely keep escalating the issue until your MacBook either works as advertised or is replaced.

As a one-time PC user (and builder!) I get the "wait, it'll get better" concept; it often does. However when it comes to customer satisfaction, particularly when a machine is still under warranty, that's not how Apple works and not how they've built their reputation.

You paid good money for a best-in-class notebook. It should work as expected. Nothing is perfect in this world, but Apple does have exceptional customer support. You paid for that as well. Again, be polite but firm and they will take care of you. 🙂

Understood. I would go ahead and call Apple Support and open a ticket or contact Apple online. That way when you do go to the a store in France they'll have a record of it...plus the date of the support ticket will stay valid so warranty work would still be applicable if something happens down the road.

WiFi can be a real pain. Almost without exception I've found that the issues are with the network itself (setup, settings, etc.) rather than the computer, but anything is possible. Sometimes all it takes is rebooting everything to do with the network and computer to establish a decent connection, but other times it's more compliacted.

Best of luck and safe travels!

I called the Apple Support, sent them 4 Capture datas to compare Lion with Mountain Lion ans they wanted to call ne in tuesday... Nothing happened. That is the third time ans the third apple worker that i sent all Files and so on and the third time Nobody called me again. Poor!

Well that stinks. Did you get a support ticket #? If so I'd call, tell them what happened and ask to talk to a supervisor. There's no excuse for that kind of service. If not I'd open a support ticket...if there's still an issue.

my MBP i7 mid 2012, 3+ month old, my battery health now 88%, 2% drain at 1-2 minute. i don't want to clean install coz i have a lot of data, can i re install and how about my data lose or still in HDD. any help sir

As I've advised others, since your MacBook is still under warranty take it back to Apple. If your battery's health has dropped to 88% in 90 days it will certainly fail soon. I wouldn't waste any time doing any of the recommendations on this thread...something is clearly wrong with your machine.

If you don't have an Apple store nearby, contact Apple Support and open a ticket today.

BTW, I trust that you're backing up your hard drive via Time Machine or some other method on a regular basis correct? You will need it if they replace your MacBook.

Best of luck!

ooookdoke...

so, as a last attempt before going back to Apple and politely demanding they fix my machine, I did a clean install of mountain Lion (+ applied update and did an SMD reset).

The very initial signs were good - my battery started at 5.5hrs and then went up to 7hrs. The estimate then jumped around quite wildlyand then settled back to 6.5.

BUT... after about 30minutes use the estimate took a very sudden nose dive back down to 3.4hrs (at 83%).

The estimate is certainly doing some crazy things - as I type its just gone UP from 3.4hrs to 4.3hrs to 5.18hrs in a matter of 3minutes!

Ill keep an eye on things still - but Im fully expecting the machine to settle back down to being 3.5hrs max.

I have an appointment on tuesday so will take the machine in as it is without any other software installed.

Just out of interest - what do people think would be the minimum hours I should expect to get out of my machine before expecting apple to fix it for me?

thanks guys

Well...congratulations on the fresh install! Nice work. After a fresh install I had the same experience initially...the battery life estimate was pretty unpredictable. It took a good 3 to 5 charge cycles before things settled in. Even then another two or three cycles after that before it really began to be quite accurate.

So I'd give it a while. Charge it up fully, leaving it plugged in for a couple of hours after the MagSafe connector LED turns green and then discharge down to something under 40% before plugging it back in again. Follow that routine a half-dozen times and you should see some reliability in however it's going to behave.

Also keep in mind that after a fresh install Spotlight will be indexing your entire hard drive for a while (plus more indexing when you reinstall apps, add files, etc.). Indexing takes a lot of CPU/power. It will also slow the machine down some. So again, give it a while to stabilize.

I can't recall which model MacBook you have (2012 MacBook Pro?), but I believe the spec is around 7 hours of WiFi web browsing (check here). That's light duty, so any heavy lifting (playing videos, etc.) will be less. Somewhere around 5 to 6+ hours of mixed use seems to be about average...again...give it some time to get there though. If that turns out not to be the case, then I'd certainly head back to the Apple store.

Congrats again and best of luck!

:-) this is nuts - my estimate has now shot up to 14hrs!! (at 76%) there is something seriously screwy going on here.

There's been no indexing going on during this time as I havent added anything onto the computer to reindex.

mmmm.... Im almost hoping that it goes back down to 3.5hrs - because I think there's something strange going on here and Id rather they investigate.
