Q: Battery life dropped considerably on Mountain Lion.

I upgraded to mountail Lion and now my battery life is about half of what it was before upgrading. Shouldn't the update improve battery life? Also, what can I do about this?

Here's another one to the list...

The battery life of my MacBook Pro (late 2011) dropped to 50-60% of its original battery life (I bought it with Lion originally installed in it, and got no problem over the last year...)

But, FYI, I did both upgraded (first try) and performed a clean install and nothing helped. In both cases i had the battery life issue.

I'm pretty confindent Apple it's going to solve the problem, so let's stick with and wait for 10.8.1. If nothing gets better, then screw it, i'll go back to Lion.

Got my rMBP before all of this nonsense with the battery life came out so I did the stupid thing and "upgraded" to Mountain Lion.  This was my first major Apple purchase and I must say I am severely disappointed.  My battery life with what I would consider normal usage is no more than 2.5 hours.  So, I am getting much less than half of what was advertised.

I know better than to get the first version of a major release of software...I have always known this so I do not know why I had this lapse in judgement.  Geez.

It is shocking that a fix for this issue has yet to be released.  Feel like I really threw a lot of money out the window at this time.  Not very encouraging reading through all of these posts.  At least misery loves company and it appears I have LOTS of company

And, almost 75k views for one thread!  That is impressive!

Can you check your Activity Monitor? Any unusual CPU usages?

My problem was the finder constantly running at much more than necessary (30% and more).

I have disabled/turned off dropbox and this seems to get things back to normal in terms of battery life as well.

My battery life is exponentially getting worse! Initially I was getting about 4 hours on ML but now after a full charge and letting it calculate remaining time and running it till it dies, I'm getting about 2 hours out of this 2011 MBP. I thought my battery drain on Lion was bad. I want a new battery and/or machine....this Heavy draw and High heat is damaging my machine! Let's not be naive please people!!! Apple, We Have a Problem Houston!

There sems to be a problem with the graphics handeling.  If you use the integrated graphics card the battery life improves.  The nvidia card will drain the battery in a matter of a couple hours.

Aslo, what is wrong with SPOTLIGHT in ML?  What happend to 'FIND FILE LOCATION' (command space -> command enter)? It no longer works?!

    Another not good test.

Clean install of ML, with filevault, localization and icloud on.

    Battery 100%, remaining time 1h 48min.

Battery drain exist also during the installation by the recovery partition (100% to 97% in 2-3 minutes).

    Please Apple, fix it. Quickly.

Just thought I would add my experience. Spoke to a guy at Apple Support today and he had no knowledge that there was an issue with ML and battery life. I told him there was a 70 page thread on this but all he could suggest was having my Air 11 2011 looked at for a possible battery replacement.

Since downloading ML battery life has halved and the Air's fan always seems to be on. Never noticed it before. Bit fed up really!

Ok, I tried to start my Macbook Pro (early 2008 model) today, without having it plugged in to the power socket.

Noting happened when I pushed the power button, so I looked at the indicator lights of the battery (third party Yanex, bought just a few months ago). None of the indicator lights were lit, when I pushed the control button.

    The battery is completely dead.

With Lion I never had this problem. The Macbook always was at 100% battery power and it was charging just fine. No problems with my third party battery.

Now I have another battery lying around (unmarked and unbranded) en there are 3 light when I battery test it. With Lion it was working fine, with Mountain Lion it isn't recognized and it won't charge or give its power to the Macbook.

Now I have to use my old (also third party) battery that came with my Macbook Pro. The only one that works at this point (for 10 minutes or so).

Does Mountain Lion "ban" third party battery's or is it "eating" battery's?

Now my laptop has become a desktop... :S

Well I am a bit worried.  I just bought this Macbook Air 2012.  It is barely 8 weeks old and coconut battery reports I have 94% of design capacity left.  It has had 18 cycles. In reality it has probably had max 5-10 cycles and then with these troubles the number of cycles have gone up.  I run it nearly all the time on mains and not had much usage on battery yet.  Is Mountain Lion slowly destroying my battery.  Can we get our money back?

Apple has again reached out to me for infomation on this issue.  I just asked them to clarify the longrun adverse effect to batery life due to ML.  It would be terrible if the OS were physically damaging the battery.

10.7.4 that fixed my Lion battery issues was also silent on battery updates. They will never admit it. We just need to hope that all this data collection and contact means they are taking it seriously.
