Aug 29, 2012 6:53 PM in response to gmc74by Beisarius,What a supply chain should never do:
Essentially, rMBP owners with LG screens are getting burn-in screens. Yes, for a retina LED! Apple is replacing them, and LG corrected the problem. As usual, Samsung's screens were perfect. Goes a long way to say how same high end gadget, but different component manufacturer, came with a completely different problem. You would think they tested those as well.. Their forum (referenced in the link) is also over 100 pages of frustrated customers.
So would you prefer a short life battery, or burnt in screen? Am just being sarcastic of course. I had no idea of this until a few minutes ago. My trust in the brand is taking hits, but their adressing the situation, certainly in the case of the burnt in screens, is exemplary.
Now, can we admit and fix the battery issue?

Aug 29, 2012 6:59 PM in response to Beisariusby Neil Richmond2,Hi Beisarius,
Can I do a clean instal of Lion and then restore a Lion backup from time machine? I kept separate Snow Leopard, Lion and Mountain Lion backups? (learned my lesson when I tried to upgrade SL to Lion and then tried to go back)
Can I manually grab mail from ML backup to updfate mail in Lion? Thanks.

Aug 29, 2012 7:24 PM in response to Neil Richmond2by Beisarius,Hi Neil,
You could do a restore from time machine, but the problem is that you likely modified documents between Lion and ML. Then you would still need to go back and reimport ML files. Unless you have no such problem, you could try the fol:
- reformat
- PRAM/SMC reset x 3- some times it does not do be it we think it did.
- clean install (it brings back Lion firmware) and updates, which will further update the firmware
- Then, if you wish, reboot again and image restore of Lion,
- manually replace docs from your latest image
beware of installing a 10.7.4 on top of a 10.7.8, for example. you will get issues. hence my recommending manual import and no image install unless your last Lion image was a 10.7.8 as well.
I would not just install the image (which some people did) without a prior Lion clean install. I suspect a simple Time Machine Restore will just image on top of residual ML firmware (as you are no longer doing a Lion install or update) through a sector by sector disk restore. Hence some users still having some issues after image restore of Lion. Learned this after asking Apple tech support about factory reset, and was told that installation disks or partitions equally reinstall the firmware and driver updates they contain.
As for mail, am not a mail specialist, somewhere someone may explain how to retreive email data from your user account. I do not see why it cannot be done. With Outlook and imap, one automatically retrieves all messages.
If you got SL, might surprise you how faster it works on an older macbook.

Aug 29, 2012 9:20 PM in response to Beisariusby WorldPat,Thinking about going back to SL on my early 2008 MBP. Would a clean install of SL reset firmware? Or would the ML firmware with the internet recovey option persist?

Aug 29, 2012 9:27 PM in response to Beisariusby gmc74,My laptop is 2 months out of warranty, so no, it does not happen that way. If it was still in warranty, then I could get it fixed at the store.

Aug 29, 2012 10:01 PM in response to jpengland96by bartlettpsj,Hi all,
What battery life should I expect on MBA 2012 i7?
Yesterday after calibrating and using the computer for 6:58 (nearly 7 hr) battery ran out. During that day I just did very light surfing, mail, excel and skype and a 1 hr point where I didn't touch it at all. I had brightness on 40%.
I'm thinking this is too low as it was 6 hr usage and very light.
Does anyone have a benchmark or what we should really expect?
Paul

Aug 29, 2012 10:45 PM in response to Neil Richmond2by adi190,Its quite weird that Apple does not allow us to send private messages to any user in particular. This ways the problem is that, there is a fine possibility that Neil will never read my message. Neil, I have done what you are wanting to do.
I had taken a Time Machine back up of my machine with LION on it, just before I installed ML.
After I used ML for a few days and was not satisfied with its performance, I took another Time Machine back up of my machine (with ML) on it.
I restored my machine to my LION backup using restore function.
I separately restored the folders which i knew had files which i had edited during my stint with ML.
I restored the mail folder (you will find it in a folder named "V2", just search for it on ur TM backup).
I just realised you have specifically asked about grabbing your mail. If you are using a gmail account, or any other IMAP account for that matter, then I think you dont have to worry much about your mail. Any case, there is a folder named V2, what I did was that I searched for it in my ML Back up using the search bar. Once i had found it in the backup, i just directed my machine to restore it. That done, all my mails were back, inbox, sent, everything. I see no reason why the same should not work for you.
Though what more experienced people are saying that the firmwares will not be reverted by this method, seems to make sense to me; but then, i have not faced ne problems with my machine since then, and I am gladly not interested in going back to ML. Keeping my fingers crossed.

Aug 29, 2012 10:42 PM in response to bartlettpsjby redfarsi,Apple states 5 hours so anything above is good. Also are you on mountain lion or lion?
I just formatted my entire hard drive because I read apple servers will send me Lion since Lion was preinstalled but instead they pushed Mountain Lion to my computer. I think my battery life Improved.
With a fresh install of mountain lion I started at 9:30 and at 12:00 I had 67% battery.(2.5 hours of constant safari with a few tabs). The laptop was always warm but never hot like before the fresh install. Fan was always on but I couldn't hear it.
Istat showed CPU temp 50-60 Celsius and fan speed was always 1997-2050 rpm.
Can someone else provide their istat readings?

Aug 29, 2012 11:33 PM in response to jpengland96by eddyr,So. Sick of the problem and tired of waiting for Apple to aknowledge and /or come up with a fix.
I rang Apple Care (Australia) didn't know or claimed not to know of the problem, arranged an Apple genius bar appointment tomorrow.
Couldn't authorise a refund for ML 10.8 but arranged for a product of the same value there abouts.
So I will not accept that I have to pay for battery replacement for a battery that has now lost 7% health after 23 cycles and so I will be demanding they reformat and clean install Lion for me and replace the batteries in my two MacBook Air that have suffered this maladay at the hands of the Mountain Lion and will not go to Mountain Lion again until I see there is a deffinate aknowledgment and fix from Apple.
Personally I think, as it is only some Macbooks and MacBook Airs having this problem that it is a faulty bunch of batteries or battery chips from maybe different manufacturers this is a problem Apple MUST rectify.
I'll let you know what happens tomorrow although I dare say they will keep the machines overnight at least.

Aug 30, 2012 2:44 AM in response to WorldPatby Beisarius,Hey Pat,
First two times I had tried going to SL I got a blue screen of death when doing the final update. It was resolved when I redid a clean install, and left the final update (10.6.8) as very last and did let all files update at once.
But yes, it will reinstall the SL firmware and you will see it identified in the system properties as you go About This Mac. Runs and feels like SL, and not at all ML.

Aug 30, 2012 3:01 AM in response to gmc74by Beisarius, gmc, the warranty thing is indeed a bummer. Of course, if they identify a hardware issue, they may extend the warranty- as they did in the past (NVIDIA affected units got a 4th year warranty instead of Apple's standard 1). Either case, if you get a new battery, and same problem, i would return the battery for a reimbursement and, pending this issue being solved, would leave you with no mobility option but to purchase a new notebook.
Paul, 6-7 hrs of the Air I am fairly sure that is what they advertise. 7-8 hrs should be for the Pro line. and i-5 would get indeed a bit more life, but unsure how much. Wi fi signal, strength, also affect it. But over 6 hrs is specs.

Aug 30, 2012 3:02 AM in response to bartlettpsjby Beisarius, eddyr,
Agree, faulty components from 3d supplier. Even in my case, the trackpad issue I thought solved was not. This MBA has 8 days, already been opened and checked by geniuses. Trackpad was loose from the factory. But I do not have most touch gestures; it irked me. Then Apple Techs told me it was loss of voltage somewhere. In the end, Apple UPSed ordered me another MBA from the factory so this unit will go back, and fingers crossed the new one does not come with faulty components. They also offered me up to 30 days for exchange or refund. Ideally, the unit I get works. Had I not checked, would not have discovered half the gestures never worked.

Aug 30, 2012 6:19 AM in response to redfarsiby njerisaidhi,i just clean installed ML yesterday, after i called apple and they told me a clean install should fix my problems since my system is a little more than a year old. i upgraded my RAM to 8GB, didn't seem to do anything.
CPU is at 50 Celsius, exhaust at 1996 rpm, 89% battery health, at 94% i've got 4:18, but the time remaining on menu bar says 3:09

Aug 30, 2012 6:50 AM in response to njerisaidhiby Beisarius,Hey saidhi,
Like almost all users that have the problem on a 1 yr + machine, it cannot be improved or undone by any means- short of Apple magically releasing a fix, but we suspect that hardware has some inherent flaw so no fix may even come. Refund ML ,a clean Lion install, as per emails above, are your only options.
