Q: Battery life dropped considerably on Mountain Lion.

I upgraded to mountail Lion and now my battery life is about half of what it was before upgrading. Shouldn't the update improve battery life? Also, what can I do about this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

mhm.. the problem is, that my original Lion DVD is lent to a friend. In my opinion it is much to complicated, but okay. It seems to be the only way.

Does it make sense to go to a apple store? I think they will spend a new battery to my MacBookPro.. better then nothing. ****.

Is it illegal to download a Lion DVD from the Internet, when i have a original license?

I was able to do an Internet restore (hold command-r during boot) that allowed me to install Lion instead of Mountain Lion.  However, this may only work if you bought your mac with Lion installed.

If you have an external hard drive, try to create a Lion recovery disk: http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1433

Okay, I'm confused, and concerned I guess.  AFAIK there never was a "Lion DVD"; Apple sold a proprietary thumb drive for $69.99.  Even if that's what you meant, why would you "lend it to a friend"?

If you paid for Lion it'll show up in your Mac App Store purchases and your Apple account, so yes, you can make an appointment with an Apple Store and ask them to reinstall Lion.  If you're going to the Apple store you could explain the situation and have them run a diagnosis to see what they find.

I'll let others chime in if they'd like, but your story is getting dodgy so I think I'll leave it at that.

    Good point...and another option.

    Huh?

Sorry, but I think you do not understand!

I lent my SL DVD to a friend! I bought Lion in the store, but now I cant download, because I have M installed. Clear?

My MBP was bought with SL..

Okay...it's a language thing I think.  You said that you lent your "original Lion DVD"...when you meant Snow Leopard.  Both are big cats, but...  In any case I'm still not clear why you'd lend your SL DVD to anyone, but that's OT.

So yes, you can either get your SL DVD back and reinstall the original OS then upgrade to Lion OR you can take it to Apple and have them do it.  Me? If it's not too much trouble I'd take it to Apple, explain the problem and see what they'll do for you.

Best of luck and let us know how it goes!

Ah okay.. Sorry.. Just a mistake!

Whatever.. this thread has another topic I think! All those problems wouldn't be, when there is no battery drop under ML :/

Has anybody the problem with slow shutting down since ML? I have an SSD in my MBP. Under SL and Lion my MBP was shutting down in 2 seconds.. since I have ML it takes sometimes 30 seconds..

I also noticed a slow ML shutdown but on older macbooks. 20 30 40 seconds.. but on the 2012 with SSD it is seconds. Again that could be related to some app, or something running in the background still.. maybe an iCloud sync? I do not know..

To richsadams, am wondering, as I guessed -1100 range (you told me -998), this tells me that, possibly, your battery now is a 4000 mAh. I know it may say otherwise in apps, but that is also what a defective battery does. Could ML have done it? Yes. If somehow the chip inside went haywire following ML's installation, and could no longer read the entire charge, it would make sense.

Only way to test this theory, is to install a completely new battery and see how much you get with Lion.

Indeed, hard to say without installing a new battery.  I think I'll hold out to see what Apple comes up with though.  It does still work and I'd just as soon not spend $129 if I don't need to.  We'll see I guess.

FWIW the original spec is 4680mAh.  I was (sort of) pleased to see the current max reading increase to around 4410 mAh, which is about 94%, a full percentage point higher than with ML.  Probably just an anomaly but still better than continuing to drop.

BTW, I did try that recommended SMC reset that another member said helped...run the battery flat, reset the SMC and then give a full charge.  Unfortunately no change for me.

I'm just glad my MBA isn't part of my daily "must haves".  I have a lot of empathy for folks that really need their laptops to be über portable and long-lasting (like my MacBook was).  I'm only using it once in a while now and relying mostly on my iPad for a good 9 or 10 hours of battery goodness.  It's not a substitute by any means, but it handles the basics.

Now I'm in wait-and-see mode.  [drumming fingers on desk]  Hope Apple can resolve this.

    Hi all,

    MBP 13' i5 2012

I have opened a case with apple in Sydney and they asked me to clean install ML.

    Before i do this

I did a SMC reset and timed the battery drainage at 1% every 5.3 minutes. Is that normal for real world

use which included: iTunes,iPhoto,Safari(5 Tabs opened)Activity monitor, battery health and Mac app store?

    Please advise

    Cheers Paul

My MacBook Air drains at about 1% per minute under light use with ML.  I'd kill for 1% every 5 minutes!  Or are you just showing off?

Understood Paul.  In the six or so years since I switched to Apple I've had nothing but superb performance.  We have four Macs in our household, iPhones, an iPad, an iPod, an Apple TV and more.  The few things that I've needed to be addressed by Apple were taken care of immediately and almost all without cost so I couldn't be happier...at least until now.  But I've no reason to doubt that this battery issue won't get sorted as well.

I can't speak to the battery use on your particular model, but that sounds like you should get around 7 or 8 hours of use...which is what's advertised I believe. Anyway, I'm sure others will chime in.

    Cheers!

Richsadams, just so you know, you are draining as much as I am (around -1000) so with your max charge around 4600, that gives you just abit more than 4.25 hrs... So from what you are telling me, your machine runs.. normally. I get 6+ hours as I have this new processor and a 6500 battery.  However your unit was draining under MLion/Lion, your figures seem on par with mine- just for a smaller battery...

to give you another reference, 2008 and 2009MBPs I tried were between -2000 and -3000 mAh, so no wonder 2 hrs tops.

Paul, sounds to me you are experiencing a classic case of buyer's guilt and transition anxiety and insecurity. At 5.3 minutes you are talking over 8 hours... If you compared your readings with Apple's tech specs and you still have concerns, you might want to seek support.. elsewhere. This forum is for poor souls that drain 1% every 2-3 minutes. We cannot help you with your issue.

Take deep breaths, relax, it's a Mac.... But if you get panic attacks reading this forum, just use a paper bag and breathe in, and out. In and out..
