Q: Battery life dropped considerably on Mountain Lion.

I upgraded to mountail Lion and now my battery life is about half of what it was before upgrading. Shouldn't the update improve battery life? Also, what can I do about this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

    hi guys,

every of my problems seem to be desappeared!! here's what's happened..

yesterday i went to the genius bar. i said to the guy (very smart and gentle) that i have a major problem: i downloaded ML.

he immediately said: "why? i had an older computer than yours and it's perfect..", then he checked the activity monitor and we immediately saw the origin of my issue.

half of the cpu was working as it was working on hi res photos with iphoto (he said). but only the monitor activity window was open. no wifi, no other windows, no internet, no other apps working, nothing. only turn the mac on and opened the activity monitor window.

battery was 100% full and it said 3.53 hours left. (unfortunately i didn't photograph immediately. then, once home, after the trying i didn't everything came back to normal)

even he didn't showed it, he was shocked.. ahah so he immediately agree with me that it's a major problem.

he said that the 4 processor wasn't aligned, so the don't work properly..

so he told me to do a clean install of ML with the recovery disk (starting the mac with ALT button pressed) then do one partition of the hd and start (of course with a back up done). i tried, but the mac didn't allowed me to do the partion as he said that the disc is in use. i don't know why, as i'm not a professional in this.

so i took another appointment for next saturay..

as said the strange thing is that after i did the backup and tried to reinstall, the activity suddenly came back to normal and the battery life gained indicredibly, as you can see in the pictures. what you see is with wifi active, the browser opened while i'm writing this post.

so, this is a miracle or i don't know...

i'll keep this checked and i'll let you know if the situation turn bad again or not, i only see that the cpu, now is working correctly and even the battery health gained.

sorry if my english is not perfect, i hope that i've been clear..

    ciao

    Hey!

Try to use Safe mode and check up your battery time.. Press Shift while booting!

I have up to 8 hours in safe mode with wlan on. Crazy..

Not crazy at all, it means that something you installed is using battery power, in safe mode no 3rd party installations run, hence the difference.

Well...that's a new one!  I wonder how he could tell?  Is there a test for something like that?

Thanks for the feedback.  Hope it continues to work normally and keep us posted!

P.S. Your English is just fine (and almost certainly much better than I am able to speak your native language).

    Guys,

I just started my rMBP in Safe Mode and is awfully slow

Tried several times with similar results so I am unable to measure battery life in Safe Mode

Revised in Apple Support site and Google and found nothing

The only way out is pressing the Power button until it shuts off

When starts in normal mode, battery life has the same short life

Safe mode is slower than normal mode, be patient.

You would get better results if you started a seperate post and included details of your issue.

Hm.. I have with 100% Battery 7,5 hours with WLAN on.

So which process takes so much battery power in normal mode?! I started every program I have in safe mode and I have 7,5 hours.. Oo

Aw, shucks. I just wiped my computer clean and downgraded all the way down to SL, heh.

Oh well! I sincerely hope 10.8.2 will fix the battery problem as the article claims! :) I would love to be able to use ML in the future.

Sure that article is all fine and dandy, but, can't software be tweaked to "show" higher levels in the algorithyms, much like AntennaGate? My other concern is what has this almost 2 months of running ML on my machine done to my hardware? Mind you I am running TWO partitions on my computer, one with the Lion untouched, and then I added a second partition to use ML. Know what......when I switch over to my origional Upgraded Lion from SL, the battery and heat issue is THERE TOO! What does this mean? It damaged my MBP!?

Thanks for brining awareness to this!  I recently purchased a 15 in Macbook Pro last week.  I am on MY 3RD one because after numerous upgrades/downgrades I was getting about 4 hours on a "FULL" healthy battery.  I saw that 10.8.2 should fix this...what is annoying is calling apple care and them acting like I was the only one with this problem.  And at one point intimated that perhaps I didn't initially charge it correctly.

Today's The MacObserver reports on their tests regarding MBP battery problems, the one that we've been discussing here. Some users have reported decreased battery capabilities after installing Mountain Lion, and The MacObserver's lengthy tests have confirmed something like them on their test-bed MacBook Pro. In those tests, the problems have disappeared when they installed the current build of proposed update 10.8.2.

    The MacObserver:

"...The big change came with 10.8.2, which is still undergoing developer testing. Using the latest build, 12C35, we saw a tremendous increase in battery life, to the point where running time was a few minutes longer than even that of 10.6.8..."

In other words, that build of the proposed 10.8.2 is giving them even better battery charging / lifetime results -- at least with their particular test-bed MBP and the current build of the proposed update -- than they observed with Snow Leopard. By the way, their test MacBook Pro seems to be a vanilla, fairly average 2011 MBP.

It's certainly encouraging that these real-world results on a developer build are making the battery problem, at least the one that they experienced on their test MBP, completely disappear.
