Q: Battery life dropped considerably on Mountain Lion.

I upgraded to mountail Lion and now my battery life is about half of what it was before upgrading. Shouldn't the update improve battery life? Also, what can I do about this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion

Check your SMV version by opening "about this mac", then click "more info" then "system report".... you'll find a bit like this:

L2 Cache (per Core):          256 KB

      L3 Cache:          4 MB

      Memory:          4 GB

      Boot ROM Version:          MBA41.0077.B0F

      SMC Version (system):          1.73f65

    ....when you click "Hardware".

Mine SMC version was 1.6xxxx before, it is now 1.7xxx so I suppose the SMC did update in one of the updates.

"Power Nap" support only the machine that based on "flash memory". The one using spinning "harddisk" is not supported.  I think their are only 2 models that is supported. Macbook Air and a new Macbook Pro 15" Ratina Display.  Please read the specification carefully.

wow, I actually had no idea that they update the firmware but without updating its info in the system description? Strange, i thought some users could report that it had been indeed updated in system properties...

But then again, would they not list that SMC version in their SMC sheet for all models?

For those unsure as to what we are discussing, the SMC link will help:

do i need to do the calibration because it says here...

    Portables with built-in batteries

Current Apple portable computer batteries are pre-calibrated and do not require the calibration procedure outlined in this article. These computers use batteries that should be replaced only by an Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Unless you have an older Mac with a removeable battery you do not need to calibrate.

Today I talked to tech support and they told me to do so with my MacBook Pro (Retina, Mid 2012). So.. I guess this is not a problem.

Actually it looks to be correct.  It's easy to confuse the core SMC versions with the Hardware Overview version listed for a particular MacBook model.

It would seem logical that SMC 1.7 would read 1.7xxx in a MacBook's Hardware Overview.  However that's not the case.  The Hardware Overview number is proprietary - specific to that model, year, etc.  So if the HO version is listed as 1.66f60 it could well be that the core SMC version is actually 1.7.  Or HO version 1.33f8 actually is running SMC core version 1.2.  The HO version won't change when the SMC firmware is updated.

So it's a bit "Apples and oranges".
