I am not sure how to get my notes to sync between my iphone and mac on Mountain Lion.  Reminds works fine but when i went to look at notes I noticed that on my iphone under iCloud i didn't have notes turned on.  So when i turned it on it said something about needing to create a @me address so i created one but now my notes are synched.  Am I  missing something?

I'm pulling my hair out of this one too--frankly the Notes sync is the reason I upgraded to Mountain Lion in the first place.

I read in the Macworld review that you have to have a valid IMAP email account specified in the Mail, Contacts & Calendars section of System Preferences on your Mac, but I don't know how to do that since that free account that I just created didn't ask me for a password.

Even stranger, while I can't see any of the notes from my iPod Touch on my MacBook Air, I *can* see notes that I created on my MacBook Air on my iPod Touch, but only in the new account in the Mail app, of all places, This is ridiculous!

Considering how wonderfully simple Apple makes everything, the way they've implemented Notes sync is almost criminal. Why can't it be as easy as reminders, contacts, and calendar?

Have you opted to sync Notes in the iCloud pane in SystemPreferences?

I have had this working on all my devices for a few weeks (2 iPhones, 1 iPod, 1 iPad, 1 Mac, 1 Win machine). I am using my .ME address.

Go to each IOS device, sign out of iCloud and then sign back in, make sure Notes is turned on, reboot each device.

Go the MAC, sign in and out, make sure Notes is turned on, reboot MAC.

I tried that, but it keeps turning itself off on the MacBook Air.

I have turned on Notes sync on my iPod Touch, both under iCloud and in the Mail, Contacts, Calendars section of the Settings app on my Touch.

It all seems to be tied to that email account I was forced to create on my Touch in order to turn on Notes sync, I just can't figure out how to add that same account on my Air.

That helps, but I need even more "dummy" style instructions--when I sign out of iCloud on my Touch, will it delete stuff already on my device?

I'm ashamed to admit this, but I don't see a place to sign out of iCloud on my Touch either--I can delete the account, but I don't see a way to sign out of it.

whitewater2, Thanks for the suggestion.  I deleted my iCloud account from my iphone and then signed in again and it now appears that notes are syncing between my mac and iphone.  Although old notes that i had on my iphone were not syched to my mac.  it looks like it is only syncing new notes going forward.

    Thanks again.

So it doesn't sync existing notes? That's a major problem for me. I guess I can export them all and then copy and paste, but that sure isn't up to Apple standards, IMHO. Everything else in the cloud works so flawlessly!

There's still no separate section on either, though the notes I created on my Air are showing up in the Mail section of the site.

It doesn't seem right but thats what I am experiencing.  Everything else on icloud worked as it should im just not sure why notes is acting so differently.

  • whitewater2 Level 3 (665 points)

Glad it worked for you !

Yes it only does notes going forward, but you can just copy and paste the old notes into new ones and they will sync :-)

rumours have it that future version of iCloud will have Notes/Reminders functions. .beta/

If you look at the teaser site; (only developers have access to it) you will Notes icon, so hopefully we see that soon!

I sure hope so--that would make things much, much easier. Hope that new iCloud site launches soon, or at least with the release of iOS 6.

I still don't know how to sign out of iCloud on my Touch though, and can't find any definitive answer here in support or on the web though.

Can you give a girl a hand? I'm still a Mac newbie, having been "born" a PC when I started with computers way back when.

If its like the iphone just go to settings and then iCloud, then scroll to the bottom of the page and select "Delete Account".  Then once its deleted you just sign back in again.

    Hope this helps.

    hey Jennifer,

If you go into your iCloud settings, toggle Notes Off and then Back On does that help?

Otherwise delete the icloud account then re- add it. If everything is synched to your iCloud account, when you turn it back on everything will be downoaded back.

It does, thanks! It's scary to hit that delete button though--why didn't they name it "sign out" so that folks wouldn't be scared to touch it?

I'll export all my notes just in case though, I don't know if they're backed up or not since I can't see them on the Air or the web site. Then hopefully I'll be back in business.
