Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

Never mind. Just realized my iMac is too old. Late 2009.

AirPlay will only work for mid 2011. 😟

With no home sharing on the iPhone, the remote app can only control, with it turned on instead of navigating say the computer section on aTV you can scroll the contents of the iTunes library on the phone, hit play and control if it plays through aTV or the computer. I'd make sure airplay is turned on as well on th apple tv. And verify you are signed in your account on aTV as well. If that doesnt work. If that doesn't work I would try a hard reset by holding down and menu keys down for about 6 seconds until the light flashes on the apple tv, do it with a remote, not the app. If you at still having problems it might be the aTV. But know that if you Mac goes to sleep so does the connection, so make sure your Mac is not going to sleep or putting drives to sleep in your settings. And also verify that iTunes is running on the Mac or it won't register on th apple tv. These seem very obvious but might be overlooked

Hi,

Today I bought an Apple TV 3 from Geneva Apple Store. Even though I told the responsible salesman that I have a late 2010 iMac 27' with i7 Quad Core, he told me that I can use AirPlay. After coming home I realised that wasn't the reality. Fine, I am not going to complain... After some hours of search in google, finding out the reason of the problem and reading the reviews of AirParrot (which is bad for high quality video streaming), I didn't find any discussion about my idea:

Why isn't Apple or any third party developer coming up with a software solution to connect an iOS device containing H.264 chipset to the Mac with the USB cable and use the connected devices chipset to encode the video/audio and steam it wirelessly. Is there a technical barrier for this?

Well there may be a delay in the stream (because the processing chip will be not on the main board of the computer but on a USB connected device), but who cares if the movie is coming to the TV screen a few seconds later than the computer screen?

Could somebody please reply to this? I want to know why even it is impossible.

PS: Sorry for my english. I am not a native speaker.

Best,

Olgun Elicin

Seriously Apple, I'm not happy about this either. You're selling apple tv's which say you can airplay and mirror your screen to a Imac. And now because my imac's out of 2010, it doesnt have the future airplay? What are you suggesting, that I should buy a license to airparrot, or buy a new Imac? That's so crazy, cause I've paid 1799 euro's for my computer. It should have all the functions. Please fix this with a update or give your users a free license to airparrot. this *****.

Add me to the list. Though I did some research about the ability to upgrade directly from snow leopard, I never heard that mirroring was not a possibility for my mid-2010 macbook pro. One of the main reasons I went ahead and upgraded was the abiity to upgrade. I think Apple should reconsider adding this feature to all and allowing the user to deal with degraded performance if indeed, the hardware will not be adequate.

My husband was using the Airplay feature from his laptop to our Apple TV and I was like "wow, this is the coolest thing I've ever seen" so I asked him to make mine work. I have the older MacBook unibody, so Airplay doesn't work on mine. Oh well.

No one is forcing any of you to buy an apple product. If you're not satisfied, stop buying their stuff. Otherwise, grow a pair and get over it. It's really not that big of a deal and if you're going to let something this insignificant get you all down on apple, then you should go back to your PC.

Many thanks for the input; however I shall say this once again: for people like me who have invested absurd amounts of money into Apple products for our careers, this is a serious problem. So serious that many have moved back to PCs (well they are faster, more stable[at least now anyway], cheaper, and if you build them yourself, better built).

When you've sunk £10k+ into some computers that Apple is blatently trying to phase out it's one **** of a punch in the "pair" that you claim I don't have.

My Early 2011 MBP was my first Mac purchase but not my first apple product. I have owned every version of iPhone available in Australia (3G, 3GS, 4, 4S) and am aware of limitaions of new OS with slightly older hardware. The first thing i did when the features of ML where made public was check the compatablity with my machine. I am just able to do it with my MBP so I am not complaining but seriously. I spent A$2999 on a top of the line machine and have ugraded OS' twice and have been happy both times. Lion was A$31.99 and for ML A$20.99 thats about $50 for two upgrades. when I ugraded windows Vista and then to 7 it cost me a combined price of over $500.

Cheer up, you sour apples.

If you all think you are so tech savvy and aware of apple's policies. I suggest you do a little more research on the product you are buying and not getting dazzled by the flasy lights and buying the shiny new stuff.

And I WILL stop buying their products. It's just a ****** that a PC I just bought last November is ALREADY obselete to receive all the features of a new upgrade I've been wanting badly...AIRPLAY. I'm tired of trying to figure out how to get PAGES to do what I want to do with word processing software...done APPLE.

And to r0gue02,

I DON'T think I'm so tech savvy. But I did do the research and still had to make an Apple Support call (which people should do before putting down their money if they are NOT a tecchy like I'm not). It was not clear looking at my system info that my build was mid 2010 until that info popped up on the screen during the online support request. And of course Mountain Lion hadn't been released when I bought my computer, so no amount of research or savvyness would have yielded that information.

It's just not right that less than a year after buying my computer (2 years since the build) that their upgrade features are not even available for you to buy by purchasing new chips or something (remember not a tecchy). I've been able to get updates with my Windows for free and there are not such Media-related Huge differences as you go from Windows XP to Windows 7, for example (maybe to tecchys but not features that affect my every day life using the computer). I usually am not even interested in new Windows OS's until it's time for a new laptop. Not the case with Apple OS upgrades. The new features are important and unavailable. So I'm going back to Windows where it's easier to get add-ons from other vendors for a reasonable fee if MicroSoft/Windows doesn't offer it. With Apple they block you from adding on most LEGAL third-party apps that would allow AirPlay.

FireCore said their software is legal, so I plopped down the $29 in January and have never been able to get it to work due to Apple blocking the install attempt. So I can't afford a new computer for awhile, but I'll be hooking my laptop to my TV or eventually getting windows software that will allow wireless "mirroring" on THAT system.

Then...future purchases are NO LONGER APPLE purchases.
