Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Any business that does not use 'money making' strategies will cease to exist.

Someone already has created an application, it is called AirParrot. Buy it.

And next time buy your computer from a company that does not have a money-making strategy like Kaypro or Osborne.

Obviously everyone uses money-making strategies but apple rake in billions. Over the last couple of years I have purchased an iPod, iPad, new iPad, apple tv, new mac and 2 iPhones. I have spent thousands of pounds(£) and already half of them are becoming to old for the new updates. If I spend £1200 on any piece of technology I want it to last more than 16 months. It just seems that when you buy anything from apple it is quickly replaced by a newer apple product in no time. If I spend that much on Alienware I know it will last alot longer than any apple product. Long story short apple is loosing a loyal customer and I know I'm not the first or the last.

What I do is run everything thru itunes....

I can play ALL audio thru airplay - go to system pref / audio.

If I want to stream video I use handbrake to convert to MP4 then airplay the AV file from within itunes.

Streams both the Audio and the Video without any lag issues whatsoever so I find it hard to believe that they couldn't have included mirroring direct from the menu bar.

iphoto streams fine too so basically I can pretty much stream anything in a roundabout way.

The agent you spoke with was either lying to you or misinformed. I have a Mid 2010 iMac with an i5 processor and Airplay still doesn't work for me. I'm not necessarily outraged, but I am very disappointed. Apple definitely likes to control their consumers. Although I downloaded ML and don't have AirPlay, I will not be buying a new iMac. I've had my machine for less than 2 years and it still works great. If what anthonyball said is true, that is a shame that Apple would intentionally limit the use of the Airplay capability. Apple, stop playing these market games with your loyal customers.

To all those people who purchased there Mac +2 years ago and expected to get AirPlay Mirroring as feature back then or be able to upgrade now to something that at the time of purchase did not exist, I do feel you sorry for you. But as the technology did not exist then i don't think any one here fits that category.

To all those people who bragged about thier shiny new Mac when they bought it because it was the latest and greatest at the time, there are now a new group of people bragging about how good thier Mac is.

I desperatetly want the new MBP w/ Retina Display but I can't have it because I can't afford it. Yet. That does not mean I won't buy it one day. Or may be the model after.

And If apple products become obselete so quickly than why do people still use 5 or 10 year old iPods?

Answer: Because they still do exactly what they bought them for when they got them. Play Music.

At the end of the day if you want the latest features, buy the latest product. And if a $20 OS is too expensive for you to waste your money on, think about any other times you may have wasted $20 and got nothing to show for it. Chances are it has happened alot.

People they are using Airplay to show their presentations on TV's and Projectors. now all PHD's, Doctors, Professors, Teachers have this Big problem and that APPLE does NOT care at all. it's been a long time and with 10.8.1 updates all we've got surprised that this issue still not resolved!!

We should go with Samsung, for real they are beating Apple with Phones and very soon with Laptops SamsungSeries 9. so next time Apple has to resolve their Stupid BUGs ASAP, the only word I can say for now is....F#ck Apple Administration after Steve Job left, and Apple will be gone within 10 years, remember my words! Period.

By the way, I am an IT Admin who is not only a user but a buyer, I buy at least 100 machines a year 60% Apple. and it's time to think now about PC if they have such issues can't be resolved to serve the customer.

In Apple's defense, I tried mirroring iTunes with Visulaizer enabled through AirParrot to AppleTV. The video and audio stutters every 15 seconds or so, even with everything else disabled on my iMac. Too bad becasue it is way cool when it's working. Mid 2010 iMac, loaded, Mountain Lion 10.8.1, AppleTV vers 3.

But is the screen mirroring problem hardware related or not?

Beacuse If I have a mp4 movie file and send that to itunes it will play fine on the AppleTV...

Did the same as the other 57 PAGES of posts regarding this issue. Not necessarily going to go on a nerd rage about it as all we can do is present it to them and make future choices. Sadly enough, I also recently purchased an Apple TV (NEW black box) JUST because of the reviews and airplay/mirroring support for not only my iMac, but every other iDevice to inclued iPhones (iphone 4, Just upgraded to 5 and sadly, its the only thing that works), 2 iPads (these wont connect either, iPad 2). So in essence, Apple got me SEVEN times based on what they promoted, vs what they decided not to cover. If someone has an app for this to work (AirParrot ? ) then it is apparant that Apple has left this out on purpose. Also, one would think if there is an app for it, there can be an update that will let it work as well. Apple, yall are messing over your "former" user base. Crazy when a phone will outpreform the desktop as the new iPhone has the A6 chip. Luckily, my fiance won a new iPad at her job, so at least out of the 7+ apple products, the phones and It are all that can use the mirroring. tsk tsk

Although it isnt mirroring, per se, i was watching the movies and listening to music on my TV from my iMac thru my Playstation 3, oh and funny too,,, Xbox

Well, I need to add to the chorus. I have a fine iMac mid-2010, two years old. Mirroring is the only feature of Mountain Lion that I want -- and Apple MacOS is no longer compatible with two-year old iMacs? I understand issues of hardware limitations, but really, mirroring web pages is NOT that CPU intensive. If I can route high-resolution images and video clips to my TV, I certainaly should be able to route web pages. I can run another iMac on the same network, as a remote, and web pages work just fine. So, why can Apple TV do the same?

What's worse, is that I cannot update iPhoto anymore under Lion, as it requires a higher Mac OS than Apple makes available for my machine.

Put together, Mountain Lion is an upgrade where some features are compatible and some are not for machines more than one year old. Apple -- this is not a good sign for maintainng user enthusiasm. A workaround really is needed.

One of the most important tasks for being a market leader is to be huble to it's customers and users. And completely fooling me and the 57 pages of other users is not a prefessional way to handle customers.

I have transfered over to the MAC world over the last two years, incorporating a number of Apple devices. But lately I have started to reconcider if this was a smart move or not.

Being able to do Airplay on a iPod or iPhone but not on a 1,5 year old MBP is a joke to it's users and customers.

You make some good points, Gabriel. One slightly different opinion I might add is that who they are messing with is the ever-important GROWTH/EXPANSION base. That is, customers who have NOT been "Applephiles" since the 80's or 90's but their first device was the iPhone a couple of years ago when more cellular providers could offer it. Then "synching" other iOS devices and OSX's seemed appealing, until 2 years later I have an iPad, Apple TV (peachMac and I'm sure the Apple Store said "Air Play enhancements are coming"), and just last fall got an iMac 27" intel core that was on sale. Still I dropped a pretty penny and haven't yet had it a YEAR!

THIS type of customer represents a huge growth potential to Apple. But we are not the cool-aid drinkers of the old base. Others may have a little more patience than me but I'm wearing out the Apple products I have and moving on to the competition afterwards because Apple's greed-over-service is apparent by their actions. And it now exceeds that of their competitors which is the antithesis of the whole Apple image- what set them apart.

Sure they will continue to be profitable but I believe their growth curve will definitely flatten. Because of consumers like me.
