Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

I upgraded to Mountain Lion mainly to use Airplay Mirroring. You didn't mention anywhere that it does not support all the Macbook Pros!! I want my money back!!!

I have a mid 2009 mac book pro with a 2.5 core 2 duo and 8 gigs of memory.

ok, answer me this.  I have ripped countless blu-rays - and added them to my really old windows tablet that has  a 1.2 ghz core 2, and 2 gigs of memory through itunes.  There is no lag or anything with these movies.

How can Ituens do this with no problem yet you cannot do it with a desktop.

I have had an atv for a long time, but am very disappointed that I cannot use the feature that I spent 20 dollars to use.

I like some of the features that came with mountain lion, but feel cheated that all of the features do not work.

This is my first post btw... that i can remember.

    Dear Apple,

I am quite disappointed that you were not clear in your marketing material regaring the hardware limitations of a significant, headlining feature such as Airplay Mirroring. It would have been easy to include some subtle wording that would have better warned users that only very (very) new Macs would support AirPlay Mirroring. Instead, although the capability is a headline feature, not only is there little to indicate the restriction (I had to look a few times to finally see the footnote), but users are mostly left to guess as to why the feature isn't showing up on their system. I thought that there was something wrong with my installation when I didn't see the advertised icon and the options just weren't there in the preferences. At very least, showing the option greyed out with some indication that the system doesn't support the feature would have been prudent to include. Instead, I had to google for the issue, only to find this thread.

I normally consider Apple a very user-centered company who goes out of their way to eliminate this sort of confusion. I am not entirely disheartened by this offense against that general strategy, but I do think that some public acknowledgement of this failure should be made by you. At very least you should update the marketing material as soon as possible to better reflect that most users won't actually be able to use Airplay Mirroring.

    Thanks for listening.

    Sincerely,

    Allan

Message was edited to indicate that I finally found the tiny "1" footnote beside one headline on one page that outlines the restriction.

What a letdown! My 2009 iMac, newly upgraded to Mountain Lion, can't AirPlay? Seriously? Apple fail! Is Apple turning into Microsoft?

Create an update STAT... I'm taking my complaint to Twitter and Facebook.

A dark cloud is certainly hanging over your new OS...

is anyone having issues with messages as well.  i cant find a thread in the support community.  when i try to type my apple id to sign in, it then tells me "The server encountered an error processing registration. Please try again later".  its been doing this all day.

I am in the same situation as many others. Airplay from iMAC to Apple TV not working. This is unreasonable for all the points made here in this forum.

    Needs a resolution from Apple.

Like many posters, I only upgraded to ML because of Airplay, none of the other features were of interest. I feel ripped off since there had never been any mention that Airplay would only work on newer macs. To quote Otto (alias Kevin Kline) DISAPOINTED!

Yep, add my hat to the people that were GIPPED. Even if it WAS a hardware limitation, NO effort was made to inform consumers of the lack of the flagship feature. Fix or refund, even partial, would be nice.

Yeah this is one of the first times I am very disappointed with Apple. $20 is no big deal but not making your user base aware of who can and who can't use AirPlay Mirroring with an Apple TV just stinks

    Very Disappointed

Everyone says they feel mislead, that isn't true, we WERE mislead. The ML specs clearly say our Mac are compatable with ML of which AirPlay is a large part. After this long and this many pages of comments where is Apple? This is an official Apple communication channel and we have heard nothing? I don't want a refund for ML or my now useless Apple TV, I want what I was promised!
