Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

This is the first time that I have posted here too.

I have a 2010 MBP which can't accomplish what my iPad 2 can, which is rediculous. Requesting a refund, as this is the only feature that really adds any value. Terrible, deceitful marketing and a big let down.

There is nothing wrong with a mid 2009 model iMac except that it was introduced in March of 2009. I have a late model 2009 and I will be upgrading to ML as soon as I know that the bugs have been worked out. This reminds me of the whining that has gone on since uninformed buyers discovered that their Lion upgrades no longer supported Power PC applications. The upgrade to ML is $19.99 and as mentioned earlier in the thread there is a third party application available for an additional $9.99 that will restore the function that everyone here is complaining about.

This is the first time I have posted here.  In fact, I just created an account to voice how disgusted I am with Apple right now.  I, like all of you, have waited for this feature and now feel ripped off by a company I trusted, by a company to whom I have given a great deal of my hard-earned college-student money.

    BOO APPLE!!!!

Please make the mirror feature available for all Mac models.

I am very angry. Purchased the new apple tv, upgraded to mountain lion, for the sole purpose of airplay mirroring only coming to find that my late 2008 MBP isn't good enough to use this feature. Hmmmm i think i'll be contacting apple and telling them how i feel tomorrow, and possibly even returning my apple tv and requesting a refund for ML.

That brings the price from $20 to $30, I guess that's the price you pay for having such ancient, outdated pieces from crap from way back in late 2010.

Why can Airparrot do it but Apple can't? Makes no sense other than blatantly forcing people to buy new hardware.

Add my name to the list of ****** off people because air play mirroring will not work on my Mid 2010 Macbook Pro.  I just got off a 58 min phone call speaking with apple care then a Sr. Tech.  The apple care tech went through troubleshooting steps to get it to work which of course didn't work so while he was away researching I came across this topic and he came across the tech spec page which of course list 2011 models and newer for mirroring.  I told him as many people on here stated that it wasn't notated anywhere until today after everyone has downloaded ML about the systems requirements for air play mirroring.  I informed him that my main purpose for buying ML was for this function and I could have stayed with Lion.  He then went on to say that it only works on i5 or new core processors and since I have the duo cores that the firmware doesn't support it. Sir, I have 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 which I paid extra to have configured on my macbook pro.  He replies yea although you have that processor I think the i5s came out after the i7 really o_O.  Did you upgrade the processor yourself. Nope and the i5 was an option when I bought mine back in July 2010,  and I configured my mbp to have the i7 cores which was extra $150-$200. He stated a few more things and still heard my displeased tone and decided to transfer me to a Sr. Tech.  So to make a long story short neither the apple care tech or the Sr. Tech had knowledge that AirPlay mirroring was only supported on 2011 models and newer. I stated Apple should have been more forthcoming with system restrictions on their main features of ML since I'm buying AppleTvs and ML for the particular reason which the Sr. Tech agreed  .  The Sr. tech gave me his information and within 48 will call me back with a response and hopefully a solution to this problem from the engineers.  I told him believe me Apple will if they haven't already been receiving phone about this issue because there is a blog posting 10+ pages long of people complaining.  Post your comments on here and CALL APPLE to complain so they'll hear our frustration and enable this feature on every device that can supported the feature.  IMG_0042.PNG

I bought this product under the ILLUSION i was going to recieve Apple Mirroring (which was the main/only reason i bought it for) just to find out that that my iMac (early 2009) isn't compatible. I was also THAT exited for this update that i bought Apple TV a new wireless mouse and keyboard ON A STUDENT BUDGET, to find out that i've been cheated. This is honestly ridiculous, i am so dissapointed with what Apple have done here, and have been a loyal customer for many years now.

Unless they release some form of update for the older Macs and stop false advertising, i will no longer be investing my money into this company.

seriously you cant mirror - are you kidding me..all the wait for so many days just to hear this at the end. Well Mr Cook didnt show the charm of Jobs and that was obvious. And then apple declared yesterday they couldnt meet their original estimates. And now they bungle up on ML. Looks like they are headed for MS way :-). You better 'cook' up something before you are cooked. Sad...

Wow! Airparrot actually does this better than Apple does, even on obsolete equipment. You can even send an individual app instead of the whole screen, I don't think ML does that.

Apple is going to make Airparrot a LOT of money and lose themselves a LOT of loyal customers.

One of the only useful feature of ML artificially disabled.

    This smells the class action...
