Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

Mirroring was the main reason I purchased mountain lion as well. I have been so excited about it so I could stream my whole screen (specifically DVD's) to my apple TV (which it has ALWAYS bothered me why I couldnt air-play from the DVD program or watch DVD's in iTunes.

This is rediculous and Apple should put out an update to let a majority of older macs mirror.

If I can air-play video and other apps from my iPhone 4 ,then my 2010 mac should be able to handle it.

btw I am totally checking out AirParrot right now.

Apple come on! If it can run on an ipad, it can run on an imac. If this is not fixed, this imac will be the last apple computer I will buy. I may only be one custormer, but where there is one, there is a thousand, and where there is a thousand, there is a million. I own, an imac mid 2010, New ipad, ipad 2, iphone 4S, Macbook pro. Apple tv 2 & 3. You will loose my business over trying to force some extra cash to get us to buy a new imac.

    Sadly good bye,

    former Mac lover.

Apple has pulled the wool over our eyes!

For a company who prides themselves on simplicity and customer service this was NOT communicated properly to the public. I'm ashamed to be an Apple user right now... I've never been so dissapointed.

I am also really bummed out to find that this feature is not going to work on my Mid 2010 17" MBP 2.8GHz i7 8GB RAM.  This was the one feature that I was super excited about and told everyone about.  I was so happy to be able finally send my computer screens display to my TV.

This *****....especially since a $9 app on the app store has figured out how to do it.  You would think the company making the OS would be able to work something out.

This is an outrage. Always gone into bat for Apple with their marketing bs, but this is just too much. mid 2010 too old? The apple store genius' are going to cop it.. Very disappointing

I can't believe people are complaining about being "ripped off" by a $20 OS update.  Yeah it ***** that it doesn't work...I'm in the same boat.  As has been pointed out already the older graphics chipsets dont have H264 encoding built in.  End of story.  If you want software encoding buy AirParrot and support an indie developer.  For those wondering why they can airplay movies from itunes....its because those files are already encoded with H264.....the mac only has to stream data over the network.   Get over yourselves folks.....you don't buy an OS update for one feature like airplay.  You could have spent $25 for airparrot for that one feature.  You got a lot more for your money out of the OS update.

Anyone got Apple's customer service email for refunds ? Can't find it online and I don't want to waste more time arguing over the phone about a clear-cut false advertisement case.

@Mike Sombrio.  Giving the solution of purchasing yet another application when most of the people on this thread purchased ML for the express purpose of getting the AirPlay mirroring functionality is not very comforting.  I also bought ML primarily for the AirPlay mirroring.  Why should I have to shell out another $9.99 (50% of the purchase price of ML) when I already paid $19.99 for that exact functioanlity?

If there were system requirements stated for the mirroring support then they were not very clearly conveyed.  As many others have said, AirPlay works from iPad and even my oooold iPhone 3GS so the limitation on slightly older iMacs and MBP's seems artificial.  It'd be nice to hear from Apple with technical reasons why this wasn't possible.  #feeling_duped

AirPlay *Mirroring* does not work from your iPhone 3GS.  Mirroring requires an iPhone 4S or iPad 2 or 3.  AirPlay works from your 3GS because the data is already in H264 format.

    Dear Apple,

I am also the owner of a Mid-2010 MacBook Pro 2.66GHz i7 with 8GB of RAM and I am unable to to use AirPlay Mirroring as many others have previously stated.

I spent a lot of money for this computer and to have it effectively abandoned after only two years for this functionality is very disturbing.

Would someone at Apple please inform me as to the exact technical issue preventing this feature of Mountain Lion from working on my MacBook Pro? I can use it with AirServer and AirParriot with no issues.

Apple, don't abandon our machines. I can't afford to buy a new one at this time and feel that Apple's commitment ot supporting it's existing user base in this way is a violation of the trust we put in you when we bought our machines.

Apparently, the yearly upgrade process of the Apple consumer electronics (iPod, iPhone, and iPad) has caused you to think of a fairly new MacBook Pro as out of date and in need of upgrade. If it was a $500 purchase I might agree, but this machine was over $2000 and should be supported better than you have done in this manner.

I'm in the same boat. I upgraded to Mountain Lion specifically for Airplay Mirroring on my MBA late 2010 and MBP late 2007.  I would not have upgraded if I had known Airplay mirroring wasn't supported to my Apple TV.  Apple needs to fix this and support older Macs

Fair enough.  Let's go through this then.  I have an iMac 2010 with 16 GB of RAM and an i7 processor.  You aren't seriously going to tell me that it's not powerful enough to do the transcoding on the fly when the iPhone 4S can.
