Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

This is kind of a big deal, reading through everyones posts it seems like a lot of people were ripped off yesterday (launch day of mountain lion).  I too am a victim of apple's shenanigans, this is exactly why I chose not to keep my business with apple when purchasing a smartphone.  I saw similiar things with the iphone i.e. siri on the 4s but not the 4??? So I purchased  a droid instead.  I don't think i'll go as far to say i'll purchase a pc but my loyalty to apple has diminished and i wont be recommending apple to co-workers, friends, and customers of mine like I used to.

You need to fix this apple, listen to your loyal customers and fix this, if airparrot can find out a way to give us screen sharing through 3rd party software apple can also.  So that says one thing when they do this, "we don't continue to support our products after 18months" so the fact that apple computers last much longer than typical pc's really isn't as much as an advantage if they withold features from there loyal customers.

Airparrot... not only works with your mac but also with Microsoft windows.. nice for all the users that are really upset with Apple and are thinking to return to microsoft.

AirParrot will work and allow for Air Play even on machines that Apple considers "too old." It's $10.

Not sure why a third party can make something work just great, but Apple can't? A better question is why did Apple CHOOSE to not allow it to work?

I experienced the same feelings.  I was so excited about the upgrades just to be lied to.

AirParrot works great for me and does the same thing AirPlay was supposed to.  Audio does work through my TV.  You just have to download the driver for the audio.  Getting my money back from Apple.

I find te comparison with android quite funny.

Some android tablet sold today can't even support today's latest android.. Same or the phones...

It is annoying. I wouldnt call it a lie...

Anyway, get your refund and move on.

I'm so upset right now! Months of waiting for Mountain lion to come out for this one feature only to find out after having paid of it, that it won't work on my mac. I want my money back as well. I see now in the details the requirements that I must have a new mac book from mid 2011 or newer for this this to work.

But no where in the months of watching the updates and videos from their own web page have they ever brought up the limitations of which mac's this will work on. So it never even crossed my mind to go and check system requirements for a specific feature in the latest OS Mountain Lion. Makes me wonder what else I paid for that would/will work on my mac book pro as it's not a 2011 mid year or newer...

Really apple you have let me down. Now when people ask me about mac, now I will have to tell them about this too and that more then anything else is going to hurt your sales on new mac's, that your beginning unethical practices like this.

    To sPiDeRmOnKeY7

And where do I find the audio driver for Airparrot if may ask?

I am just as ****** by this as the rest of u as my only reason for upgrading to OS 10.8 was the Airplay function.

But let's move on and dismantle this "Apple religion" it has been going on for too many years

What annoys me the most is that this issue isn't based on incompitance or 'older' technology (12 months according to Apple), it's purely based on despotism!

It's absolutely ridiculous that a 3rd party program like AirParrot will enable a simple function like airplay to work considering most people have been conned into purchasing mountain lion based on the marketing ploy that it 'does' do airplay.

Apple should have an ad on TV stating, 'For all Apple users with computers older than 12 months, BUY AIRPARROT as they seemed to have a work around for performing airplay on older machines even though we won't!'

    What a joke!

Just to get the point across VERY VERY DISSAPOINTINT APPLE... I think you have just dissapointed some of your biggest customers with a cheap money grabbing exercise. I know you do this everyday with every product you release because your a business, but this one was a little too blatent!

Click on the parrots head on the top menu and click on Start Audio.  If you don't have the driver it will ask if you want to d/l it.  That is where you find the driver.  if that doesnt work, let me know.  i'll send you the link to remove the bugged driver so the new one will replace it.  I had that issue and contacted support, and that's what they told me to do.

I think you are completely right and I feel the same way. Just to add to your point about airparrot, Apple is pushing its customers more and more towards third party software and more importantly hacking and jailbreaking simply because Apple's products aren't really delivering on their advertised features.

I did the trial of Air Parrot and it was incredibly slow and was not able to keep up with video at all. In concept it works great but is not really that great.

Agree 100% ... I feel lied to ... I bought ML for mirroring specifically. This is a cheap move from Apple. I have 5 apple products at home ... seriously considering selling them ...
