Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

This is a joke! It is only done to persuade (force) people to upgrade if they want to enjoy a feature in the OS that clearly can be handled by a lot older Macs (see Air Parrot).

I am very unhappy with the way this has been done, especially when older hardware can cope with it.

I was offered a refund when I complained, but a refund is not the point. I simply want a feature that my hardware can easily handle to work.

This is a shameful tactic Apple, one that sickens me!

I have asked Apple to return Mountain Lion and get my money back and so should everybody, so Apple knows next time not hide important information like this when Mirroring was about the only feature that made Mountain Lion worth to upgrade from Lion.

I am sure in couple of weeks someone will make a termial code that wil enable Mirroring in Mountain Lion  on  all mchine without the need for apple to allow it just like what they did with airdrop. Only then will buy MountainLion and another apple TV.

I want to add my voice of dissapointment / disapproval to this rapidly growing list!

Airplay mirroring was also one of my primary reasons for moving to Mountain Lion (which also required me to shell out to upgrade to a newer version of Parallels because there are a few Windoze apps that I have to use that don't have OS X versions!).  I still consider my mid 2010 MacBook Pro to be a pretty new machine; to then find out that it is too old for this feature is VERY annoying.  My guess is that the majority of OS X users will have hardware that is not supported for mirroring - it should have been made much clearer in the marketing that you need to have a VERY new Apple computer for this to work!

Yes, AirParrot does sort of work, but the slight delay makes it a bit useless for anything that requires quick screen refreshes, especially video.

After reading more about the reason my hardware isn't supported I can understand why, but it is bloody annoying that this was not made much clearer before bought Mountain Lion.

This is a joke and the only reason that I purchased the upgrade. Why doesn't this work with my 18 month old mac? No reason - a shameless exercise in greed from Apple. Add this to my iPad 1 exeriences and my patience is wearing thin.

Start supporting your core constituency!!! Your mac users!!!

So Apple, how do I get my money back? This is a waste of $20.

I am disappointed very badly, was counting every single day for Mt. Lion release. I think without Airplay mirrioring, Mt. Lion is piece of crap for me. I wasted my money !!! I feel cheated....Do something Apple, get technical help from AirParrot and make Airplay avialable for all Mt. Lion users.......

I also find it disgusting that a technically "identical" machine has Airplay disabled simply in what appears to be a money making scheme from Apple - I bought my MacBook Pro in early 2011 (18 months ago) and it has now been artificially disabled in a lame effort to make me update...I will be updating to a Windows machine !!!!!!!!!!!

I was a pc guy for a very long time ...switched to imac in nov 2009 and was totally happy to find the light UNTIL NOW!

I upgraded OSX to ML and now find that my 2+ year old imac doesn't support *mirroring* with ATV/2nd gen. A shameful day for Apple ...just as bad as the ole' days with MS vendor.   VERY DISAPPOINTED.

This is crap! The only reason iv been excited about getting this new upgrade is for AirPlay Mirroring from my iMac.

I am not happy, it was not clear that my 2 year old machine was not going to do be able to do this!
