Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

I´ve got an imac late 2009 with i7 cpu and four kernels. This CPU should be too slow? Look at parrot. Here we cant see how good it works. I changed from Windows to Apple because I thought Steve Jobs creates Hard- and Software for the users not against them. But now I feel it´s vice versa. Only shareholder value. Buy a new Computer. Sorry but I am deeply confused and angry about this.

Apple rescue your good name and make a good Solution for all Apple Computers that are able to mirror to Apple Tv.

How about you go ahead and get over yourself? This was not made anywhere near clear during any part of the purchase process.

What would you folks like apple to do? Replace your Mac with one with a H.264 rendering GPU? Free of charge of course. The entitled posts here are rediculous. I love the guy who bought a new $3000 TV for airplay mirroring.  I didn't see one where someone built a whole new wing of his house, but I didn't read all 28 pages. It might be in there.

    ...."AirPlay Mirroring

Requires a second-generation Apple TV or later. Supports the following Mac models:

    • iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)
    • Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)
    • MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)
    • MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)...."

Above  is/was posted on Apple website as technical specs for most of the 200 features supplied by Mtn. Lion...how could one NOT check..if one is a smart consumer?

stop blaming others & take some responsibility yourself

Since this was announced as a flagship feature at WWDC not ONCE was it mentioned that "you need the newest of the new Macs to support it." 400+ replies of people feeling that they were decieved clearly shows this this was not made nearly clear enough to the consumers. Stop trolling and if this issue does not affect you then you really should not be posting in this thread.

Darthgamer is right. Annouce it and then mention that newer mac from mid 2011 will support it. They have done this with features when iOS 5 came out.... they made sure they mentioned that iPhone 4 will support all features and 3gs will not support x.

But when they were talking about ML, they didn't once say that there were some restrictions!!! That is the point.

They could at least make AirPlay available for Quicktime!!!! That would help a lot.

I have a 2009 that is as up to date as most 2012 stock... This is the biggest F'you to apple owners EVER!    There is zero reason as to why Airplay shouldnt work. As an Apple developer in my past ..I know this is just a cheap attempt to get us to buy a new Mac./.. Apple you need to fix this yesterday!

Let's be honest were not on here about the 20 bucks.  If we have macs we can probably all afford the lost 20 bucks and we did get a couple good features however reason we are not trying to get a high end version of final cut to run on our old macs.  It's a freaking mirroring software that is perfectly capable of beig used on our computers... Case in point airparrot works almost flawlessly and I have a 5 or 6 year old computer.  It's the Siri not on iPhone 4 but on iPhone 4s ordeal because supposedly iPhone 4 couldn't handle it with its hardware.

Shame on me .. i bought a top of the line macbook pro 2010 as insurance against obsolescence.   With more than a year now remaining on my Applecare, what i actually needed is insurance against forced obsolesence.

Apple should show more respect for its past work.  Shouldn't Applecare provide some sort of insurance against obsolesence?  A three-year Applecare warranty on a machine that is forced to functional obsolesence after only two years?  Shame on you Apple!!

Even if the reason older macs can't have mirroring is because of a hardware issue they could at least partly address this problem by allowing airplay on quicktime. If they did that they wouldn't have to play the file locally like when you airplay a video in itunes to your apple tv.

I'm assuming the reason people wanted mirroring is because they have extensive collections of .avi files that they can't access with apple tv. Yes, you can convert them but converting is a ball ache and also, I hate using iTunes to organise my video media.

Not even just that, but more so we were decieved! So even if it is a hardware limitation (which my Apple tv gets video from iTunes just fine...), that's fine and all, but inform your consumers of the glaring missing feature.
