Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

I got an Apple TV 3 few months ago, just so I could airplay my ipad. First surprise, only second and third generation ipads can airplay.

Then I wait for mountain lion, so I could airplay my MBP, late 2010, Core i5 with 8 GB of RAM. Second surprise, it does support my MBP, even though I still have a very powerful machine.

History may repeat itself again. Apple without Steve is nothing but crap.

Good bye Apple, I'm comming back to PC.

This is a marketing sham, and the execs at Apple should be ashamed. I spent time trying to figure out why this "great new feature" wasn't working. I don't think that notification center is worth $20.00 and then they removed Web Sharing (Also not discussed). Overall I am not sure why this is a pay upgrade, and I am for the first time extreemly displeased with Apple. The server tools are the same story here an upgrade that is not worth the cost and time.

I have the same issue my iMac is late 2010´s fully equipped and then spend 20 USD on Mountain Lion just for the Airplay and now i find out that it wont work. Come on Apple it is an operating system why dont you make all the computers have that application if they meet all the requierements like space and memory. Facebook will work until Fall and Airplay doesnt work then I think I was 20 USD in a useless update.

This is total BS. I agree it's not really about the $20 bucks. I have a "late 2008" Macbook Pro and was looking forward to using AirPlay Mirroring but I guess I'm too old. When I saw my model was "supported" I thought it was supported. I guess I was wrong. Disappointed would be an understatement. I don't want my money back...I want my enthusiasm for Apple products back.

I have never posted in the communities before, but this was enough for me to need to write. I have been an apple user since middle school, 25 years ago. I bought an i7 Macbook Pro in Mid 2010. I am disgusted that Airplay isn't supported. I asked for a refund for mountain lion.

I can remeber when I got the email from Netflix saying that they were raising prices and splitting the service. My first thought was that they had made a huge mistake. The stock tumbled and customers were outraged. This may not impact as many customers, but I am far more outraged by this than I was about Netflix.

apple has been marketing airplay functionality coming to the macbook. I can't believe it is exclusive to 2011-12. I would completely understand if my computer were five years old... It has been less than two. I still have a year on apple care. I just bought apple tv. I was the biggest fan. If I am this offended... I imagine that AAPL will have a similar reaction to what I watched with Netflix. down...down...down

I had upgraded memory in my iMac and was waiting for this Mountain Lion upgrade for Airplay mirroring. It was a rude shock for me to find out that Airplay mirroring does not work with my iMac . This was the only real feature that I wanted in this upgrade. Moreover it was not made clear that Airplay mirroring does not work on all macs. I feel let down by Apple. After all he who goes up has to come down or lost into the oblivion

I agree as well this is bulls**** the only reason why I bought Mountain Lion is for Airplay not realizing my 2010 Mac would not work. There is absolutely no reason why they cannot support previous versions of Mac. This is why I have been starting to purchase Android Including the Nexus 7 as I am very dissapointed with the direction Apple has turned to, and I have always been a loyal customer. Wake up Apple see your quarterly sales results and realize it's because of mistakes like this.

Try Airflick, it works better than Beamer and Airparrot for viewing a variety of video files.

Only thing that matters is the bottom line.  First time in a while apple didn't beat expectations.  If you think our complaining is going to matter, good luck with that one.  Instead, they're going to have to continue screwing us, because we're apparently loyal minions.  After all, for everyone of us that leaves, they get two more customers over seas.  They really need to get in front of this one.  My computer is mid 2010.  Still feel like its new.  Am I supposed to buy a new computer ever two years now?  GTH out of here!  You can't hire Americans, we fuel your company, you screw us... Yeah this makes sense.  Strike one!

I'm pretty upset by this move. I purchased my iMac in late 2010. I paid for Lion and now Mountain Lion. I was so excited to fire up Air Play on the Apple Tv I purchased. No such luck. I just wish Apple would CLEARLY outline what the hardware will and will not be able to run prior to purchase.

Please consider adding the mirroring function, Apple.

Good thing I researched first. I almost upgrade my 2009 iMac and shell out another 100 bucks for Apple TV. Even though I haven't spent the money, I am still very disappointed. I've spent at least U$5000 on Apple products (not to mention songs and movies). I guess that's probably not much compared to many Apple fanboys. I am kissing Apple goodbye.

No reason for me to use Apple anyways when I know how to build me a decent PC and running Linux on it. Next tablet Galaxy Tab, next phone Galaxy Note 2!!!

Apple, this *****. I spent $20 on mountain lion - mainly for airplay. I checked that all our macs supported mountain lion, but I didn't see the disclaimed that must surely be there somewhere saying "support" is a qualified term meaning "partially support". I think apple should refund my money - or discount the upgrade...
