Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

I wasn't very enthusiastic about Mountain Lion except for finally being able to mirror my computer on the TV through AirPlay. In fact I was dreading the downgrade of the new Safari that would be coming with it (the new tab bar is truly, truly one of the most terrible things Apple has ever done). But I made the move and shelled out the money so I could finally have this awesomeness on my two and one half year old MacBook Pro, and Apple spit in my face for it. Just like no Siri on my iPhone 4. No iPhoto or iMovie on my iPad 1. There is a real trend toward customer abuse lately and hot poker methods to force hardware upgrades. I do not like the new Apple one bit. If Windows or Linux weren't my only options, I would be ready to flee in a heartbeat.

This amounts to fraud and cheating. Deceptive marketing practices by Apple. I've been an apple fan for a long time and bought countless apple products but this is the first bad experience which incidentally happens after Steve Jobs. This ship is sinking.  The execs at apple have lost sight and i guess shareholders have become more important than customers. I will be gradually phasing out of this Apple ecosystem. Good bye guys.

Glad to report I'm still an apple costumer. I was contacted by apple and they refunded the money for this upgrade.

    Thank apple.

Same thing here Apple..... very disappointing... I've also spent thousands on you over the years, recommend you to every man woman and child I come by... and this is the sort of way you are going with Mac Computers now. We've known it for a long time now with iPhones and iPads, i.e., the yearly upgrade of device to access advance technology and updated software, it hurts but us MacHeads do it lovingly.

This is a slap in the face Apple to all us dedicated and longer-term Apple users.

I hope someone in the upper level see this is wrong and plain unfair.

This is my first post ever on here. I am extremely upset by this because my Unibody Macbook Pro is not new enough to use Airplay. Anything that is capable of Mountain Lion should be able to use Airplay. I have bought Apple for many years and put up with all of their quirky issues and even understand why they eliminate some compatibility. But this! This is outrageous! I, like many others, bought a new ATV specifically for this. After 10 years this is the first time I am truly upset with Apple. If they would have made it more clear I would not be so upset. I feel deceived and although I do not feel like turning back to a BSD distro I will leave Apple if this continues.

I have converted so many friends. I will not be happy when I find out they made the same mstake.

    Simply Bad Business!!!

I'm sure the upper level guys are going to say this is all legal, we mentioned it won't support 2010 macs on the 'Tech Specs' page etc.  They however failed to mention it on their main features page.

    http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/

you wont find that it is not going to support older macs anywhere on this page. Not even an asterix where they describe the Airplay feature. This I find is very deceptive. No one is going to go read all the pages and fine print on thier website before making upgrades. They should have made this abundantly clear especially since this is a paid upgrade. This is very shameful guys. I've been looking forward to this feature for months now and I feel so cheated and ripped off now. Very furious on this whole thing.

first time posting here,, I bought my ATV yesterday and upgraded my system today ~ the first thing I tested- airplay  doesn't work on my late 2010 IMAC.

IF Air Parrot works, why not ML???  I felt cheated, I used to wordship apple's products and their design.

not any more, big big disappointment.

    Please FIX it asap

First post aswell.  I bought Mountain Lion for 2 main reasions,.. Air Play Mirroring, and Facebook integration -neither of which are available to me.  Didn't expect the bait and switch from Apple.

This is starting to sound like a broken record here, but this is also my first time ever posting on here or even about to make a valid complaint towards apple.  I've been a apple user for over 20 years.  over the year there have been a few things i didn't like, but over all nothing really to complain about.  But this time.  I have been searching and never found anything about capabilities and never thought it would be a issue.  months went by, always excited and looking forward to the Mirroring.  Even bragged about it about how cool it will be.  Even held off on buying some apps that could do the same, thinking apple will just do it better anyways.  I had my girl buy a itunes card and text me the code to redeem it so i wouldnt have to wait the next day.  First thing i tried was mirroring.  And to my suprise.  nothing.  At first i thought i was just dumb, searched around and even on the Help, it doesn't say.  I had to come here to find out.  Now i got links to say it the requirements.  All in all I think its incredible bull and insulting.  I know they gonna pull that the machines just cant handle it mumbo jumbo.  Also bull.  So after 20 years, this is truly the first time I want to tell Apple to F off

Ok, let's be realistic & practical here.....maybe Apple needed to throw some revenue to the developers....and the third party apps that may cost .99 cents or a little more will make the airplay mirroring available on later versions of macs & MacBooks.....then everyone is happy

I really don't believe Apple can ignore the developer community, and this may be throwing them a bone.......?

I cannot believe Apple just duped me. The only reason I bought Mountain Lion was for Airplay. I have a 2009 MBP!!! Less than 3 years old, WTH!!!!
