Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

I Am also hugely dissapointed!!! I went a step further than most our company purchased 50" displays for key personnel and apple TVs in anticipation for this specific feature. And when it didn't work with all but 1 Mac in the office I went ballistic. Thank goodness for airparrot who are probably making a ton of money from thier product.

Interesting side note the application air parrot is not on the app store and mountain lion has this BS security feature that you have to disable to allow third party non app-store installs. Lovely.

Hey this reminds me of how I felt when they took save as out of the menu.

I have not heard people screaming about the fact that it only gives you 720p not 1080p. 1080p worked fine in the developer version. I demoed it on my network of apple tvs.

My theory on this is a simple content deal. Apple is backing off this feature because it would cross the line from a creation device OSX and a consumption device IOS. Meaning apple would then sanction services like unpaid Hulu working on your on your TV. Or pirated movies in full HD.  I imagine that the media moguls gave Tim Cook a lashing over this line in the sand., Apple blinked. Right now this mirroring function works on a extremely low percentage of all the macs in deployment. Maybe less than 1%. The reason I have a hard time swallowing this CPU / GPU nonsense is that there is plenty of apple software products that bring the CPU to it's knees. Anyone use Mainstage in 64 bit. I could heat a small apartment with the heat my machine puts out. The fans kick on at launch as if it anticipates the pegging of the CPU.

Anyway if my theory is true they won't give in to a couple of thousand complaints. Just support airparrot and don't buy an iphone5.

If you really want to show your displeasure don't buy an iPhone 5 and buy a Samsung and then write to apple and tell them why. Because you screwed us for the last time!!!!

I'm totally convinced that Apple does not deserve this loyalty. I'm going get rid of all my apple products. There are lots of better product available in market. It's time to move on.

    Details:

I purchased Mountain Lion only for one reason and that was to use airplay mirroring with my Apple TV. I have now just discovered that it does not work with my macbook pro because it is more than two years old. I was never let know this before I purchased it and now feel very cheated. I am looking for a full refund of my €20 as Mountain Lion does not do what it promised to do.

    Dear ****l,

Greetings from Apple! Before I start finding a solution to your inquiry, I want to begin by introducing myself. My name is Greg and I'll be assisting you today. It is essential for me to be able to provide you with the right information for your concern, and will do the best of my ability to address this issue to your satisfaction.

From what I understand, have recently upgraded to OSX Mountain Lion and are unable to use Airplay with your Macbook Pro.  I am so sorry for the inconvenience that this may have inflicted. I would be more than happy to look into this for you today.

I deeply apologize, however, I have looked into this for you and have been advised that I am unable to refund this for you due to the iTunes Terms of Sale.

I know that we don't always have time to read these things all the way through when we sit down to create these accounts, so I have included the link to take you to the terms of sale so that you can review them when it is convenient for you, and at your leisure:

    http://www.apple.com/legal/itunes/us/terms.html#SALE

To try and help avoid this inconvenience to you in the future, I just wanted to mention that any Apps requirements can be located on the description page for that Mac App, in the "Information" box, at the bottom. It will should say "Requirements" in bold:

Just incase you find yourself curious, you can also find technical specifications for OSX Mountain Lion at the link below:

    http://www.apple.com/osx/specs/

I did a little investigation, and it looks like AirPlay Mirroring requires a second-generation Apple TV or later and supports the following Mac models:

    iMac (Mid 2011 or newer)

Mac mini (Mid 2011 or newer)

MacBook Air (Mid 2011 or newer)

MacBook Pro (Early 2011 or newer)

But I do want you to know that I definitely see where you are coming from, and would like to help you get your voice heard as the requirements may not have been in a place that makes it easy to notice before purchasing, or in Mountain Lion promotional material. Again, I sincerely apologize and want you to please rest assured that Apple recognizes that no one is better qualified to provide feedback about our products and services than the people who use them. I would like to ask if I could trouble you to please submit any feedback you have about this issue to Apple's Feedback page:

    http://www.apple.com/feedback

Your efforts to share your feedback are very much appreciated in helping the iTunes and Mac App Store to grow!

I hope I have been able to address this issue to your satisfaction, Paul.

But if I have missed anything, or if you need anything else, just name it and I'm on it. I wish you all the best and hope that you take care!

    Have a great day!

    Sincerely,

    Greg

I complained in a dissapointingly unhappy way to Apple re mirroring not working on my iMac circa 2008 and got a no quibble £13.99 refund for ML to keep me happy'ish, as they just side stepped answering technical points raised as to why they have restricted mirroring to all but the newest machines siting you're entitled to one "refund" for an app not performing as expected.

Now gotta wait for iOS6 to make other things work via icloud with iphone and ipad which I also thought would be working "out of the box" as well!

Also is the iphone 5 gonna have a 19 pin connector as opposed to the standard 30 pin? Oh dear... another disaster waiting to happen!...  Its almost farcical, lol

    Hello CuilChip,

I understand you are in UK (or in Europe anyway), am I right?

In that case Apple is SUBJECT TO European laws, no BS!

    Look here: http://eur-lex.europa.eu/LexUriServ/LexUriServ.do?uri=CELEX:31997L0007:en:HTML

    Specifically:

    Article 6

    Right of withdrawal

    1. For any distance contract the consumer shall have a period of at least seven working days in which to withdraw from the contract without penalty and without giving any reason. The only charge that may be made to the consumer because of the exercise of his right of withdrawal is the direct cost of returning the goods.

    I hope it helps.

Apple needs to spend some time getting its store information and marketing campaigns in step. I bought my computer in Mid 2011, and would assume that by July, I would be sold a 2011 model. If Apple wants to identify its products by year, it would be useful if they actually included the year in the model name they are selling in their store. As it is I have a computer that is barely a year old that cannot support the features of its current operating system, and two large screen tvs, and two Apple TV's that are incapable of working with Apple's current operating system. The Apple TV's were affordably priced, but I wouldn't have bothered buying them, if I knew that my much less affordably priced computer was already considered obsolete when I bought it (A 2010 model is obsolete in July 2011).

Apple seems to take the time so that Itunes can fully utilize my system to show television on my AppleTV using airplay but, can't make the same efforts so my students can view my desktop and web browser.

I have argued that this youtube showcase video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=j5BRsh8Dwgg) had no indication that this feature only works on certain models and that I will take this issue to small claims, unless I get a refund from Apple for the amount I paid for Mountain Lion. In about an hour, this is what I got:

"After reviewing the circumstances of your case, we determined that issuing you a refund for your unintentional purchase of "OS X Mountain Lion" is an appropriate exception to the App Store Terms and Conditions, which state that all sales are final. In five to seven business days, a credit of $19.99 should be posted to the credit card that appears on the receipt for that purchase."

You guys may try the same and send an email to macappstore_english_us_support@apple.com

A bad move for apple. We have been waiting for Mountain Lion by this and now leaves us abandoned. Can we not do anything? How do we organize ourselves?

    What!!!!

I just bought it as it seemed it work far better than Lion (easy enough).

And the most important feature for me WILL NOT WORK on my middle 2010 Macbook Pro 17"...

With some small movements APPLE is doing (why the **** did they forget about upgrading the 17" MB???) and how they are becoming I feel like trying in future the next Windows...

And it seems that there is software solution to that?? What are they thinking...

If it wasn't for the trackpad... for me the MOST amazing fact about apple :-)

Not very costumer friendly. Had the idea to use AirPlay-mirroring. Checked if my MBP mid2010 was compatible with ML and when it was I just bought it without hesitation. Now THAT function does not work. So lame.

It's very disappointing that this feature that works so well on my iPad and iPhone don't work on my Mac.  I too feel ripped off and to make matters worse, after upgrading, some of my other apps, like Parallels Desktop, don't work anymore!  I have to say, this is the first time I've been really disappointed with Apple...I hope they resolve this issue soon as they are alienating some of their best customers...

I am avid Apple supporter but I agree that we were hoodwincked.  There should have been a clearer understanding of what features were obsolute on a less than 2 year old computer.  I, like so many others would have not purchased ML if I had known this feature didn't work.  I wouldn't have bought an Apple TV if I knew this wouldn't work.  Shame on you Apple.  If Apple doesn't do right and put in a fix, then this is my last Mac.  We miss you Steve.
