Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

This is very shabby. Like everyone else here I am a loyal Apple devotee. This is not how you should treat customers. I have a MBP mid 2010, Apple TV, Iphone Ipad's etc this leaves a bad taste.

After trying to get my head around this, I have done some research and I have come to a conclusion that Apple is probably lying regarding the hardware issue I have read online.

I have a 2008 iMac it came with an Nvidia 8800 GS GPU...

This is what Nvidia's website says about this series of Graphics Cards ,it uses a technology called Pure Video HD - PureVideo HD technology is the combination of drivers and a dedicated video-processing core on NVIDIA GeForce GPUs that deliver superb video quality with minimal CPU usage and low power consumption. Whether you're watching a Blu-ray or HD DVD disc, an HD video file downloaded from the Internet, or your own HD home movie, PureVideo HD brings video to life in vivid detail with smooth playback.

Going from Nvidia's website it seems my GPU does have dedicated hardware to proccess video, Apple just won't enable it or can be bothered to update the drivers, seems to me they are lying.

I would asume newer macs than mine would be in the same boat.

They really need to come clean on this.

If this is true... shame on you Apple.

I'm so glad I found out that my Mid 2010 iMac (which I consider very new and up-to-date) would not support mirroring. I'm not upgrading to Mountain Lion until they offer an update unlocking the functionality to more computers (including mine).

I'm sure they will say it won't work with satisfaction; I think they should just give the feature to everyone and let us decide how suitable its performance is. We are computer users - we are used to some limitations in our hardware and how we use it.  If it's not acceptable, we will either get used to it or will then be motivated to upgrade our hardware.

Mirroring is a no-brainer functionality that I have been waiting on since we got the AppleTV.  I'm not happy at all that they are still denying it to so many users.

At this stage I have 3 case numbers from support talked to a rep who advised me to go a route for a refund which I feel is the only way to voice dissatisfition with Apple like a fool I bought into their ecosystem & added 2 apple TVs ( which are on eBay) all because I have an out of date iMac ( less than 2 years old ) fool me once Apple shame on you

This makes me want to stop using Apple products. I have an Intel Core 2 Duo processor with 550 MB of dedicated VRAM and my computer cannot mirror to an Apple TV? That is nonsense. I can run play all kinds of graphics-intensive games with no problem. You know what this does? Apple's attempt to get you to buy a new computer lowers the resale value of older Macs. Policies restricting operating system features to the newest machines lower the actual value of a new Mac computer. I am certainly more hesitant to buy a new Mac if I can expect that a year later it might not be able to take advantage of basic operating system features. And if I am hesitant to buy a computer that I know I will initially like, it is because I deem the machine not quite worth the price.

What apple said when I asked for my money back:

    " Dear  Juan Carlos,

Greetings from iTunes Store/Mac App Store Customer Support. My name is Roden and I will do my best to address your concern. I understand that you want a refund for OS X Mountain Lion.

After reviewing the circumstances of your case, we determined that issuing you a refund for your unintentional purchase of "OS X Mountain Lion" is an appropriate exception to the App Store Terms and Conditions, which state that all sales are final. You will see 19.99 USD added to your store credit balance within 48 hours. You may need to sign out of the iTunes Store and then sign back in before you see the credit in your account.

Resolving your concern is important to me. Thank you for being a valued iTunes and Mac App Store customer. Have a nice day!

    Sincerely,

    Roden

iTunes Store/Mac App Store Customer Support

    What I asnwer to Roden:

"Thanks Roden. But please, do not say that the reason to ask for the refund is "unintentional purchase of "OS X Mountain Lion". Those are not my words, I want to make it clear: I am asking for my money back because Apple lied  to the consumers.  Never informed that the appliance Airplay, was not going to work in Mac´s bought before 2011."

Well said, Scortster. Ditto on that. Apple has the highest profit margin (by far) on their products. Why? Because we pay the premium on the basis of trust and expectation of strong support, design and a long life. When a Mac Mini or iMac puchased 1 year ago is deemed obsolete because Apple chose NOT to provide AirPlay Mirroring support through available software solutions (in case the video card couldn't handle), THAT IS ABOMINABLE.

When Apple hides that little fact in the small print in only one place, THAT IS MISLEADING.

SHAME on Apple. Going forward, I'll be doing my price/function comparisons between Apple & non-Apple products, rather than blindly being an Apple loyalist.

I've been hangin' on to my iPhone 3GS post-contract, awaiting iPhone 5. Now questioning if I should bother... maybe time to explore this Android or Windows Phone thing. Certainly able to find less costly options there.

I am fed up, and I have been a loyal Mac user since the early 1990's, back when the Mac brand almost died.

I bought my iMac in april 2011, is that mid 2011 ? If I remember well, they had been just refreshed at the time. Is there no way of telling if it's going to work without buying an Apple TV first ?

I also think this is absolutly redicilous. The most interessting feature about Mountain Lion is def. the mirroring feature.

Please integrate functionality for older models too. Honestly... hardware power can not be the problem.

My opinion in the last time... Apple is going in the wrong direction.

I'm not affected by this bought 2 last fall iMacs and recently new tvs and one new appletv

I will say my, despite what is claimed by Apple, my 1st gen appletv does work using mirroring from my iMac

however, I feel there are some issues here regarding the developer community

Possibly, waiting for third party apps to make the mirroring happen and not shut down a revenue source for developers

Obviously Not an issue from source vendors..at least yet since newest macs have ability

I am not in your situation, but somewhat understand what your complaint about ...you all possibly spent $120 u.s. in anticipation of what you assumed would work on your not so old imcs & macbks

If you are all feeling so gyped by Apple go to the social media spots and create an "Apple Summer" as the Egyptians did

At least that might get some Apple heads to pay attention

I am a shareholder while I ont like unfavorable publicity to hurt my investments I do feel Tim Cook is trying to take this company in a different direction....and not one that Steve Jobs worked hard to cultivate

CUSTOMER SERVICE has been not been as responsive and as understanding as in the past

We all thought Apple was different..not like Netfix,Microsoft, Motorola, blackberry

Well,  a change in leadership DOES bring change NOT always good change

Get on Facebk or Twitter and mount an action there

Keep this forum for what it's meant for HELP

I wish I could get Apple to look at this. I feel pity for everyone else, I mean mac's are really expensive compared to the other desktops and laptops and many complaints over the most wanted feature not being available to them. I bet if Steve Jobs would've been here, he probably would've made it available to everyone with computers as late as 2008. These complaints are unfortunate, Apple must take a look at this and attempt to implement airplay for the old Mac's.

File your complaint with the FTC.  I just did after Apple denied my refund request.  Deceptive practice for sure and I am very disappointed.  If we flood the FTC with the same complaint then maybe there is a small chance something will get done

I'm not complaining, I have a 2011 iMac, I was hoping I could get Apple to take a look at all these complaints. Hopefully reconsidering blocking out all the old mac's.

I have to chime in here as well.. absolutely *****ed having just upgraded to Mountain Lion only to find out that my iMac is too old (Mid 2010). Quad Core i7 Radeon GPU 1GB GRam obsolete in less than 2 years? This is ridiculous.

Apple doesn't want Power Nap feature on iMacs because they think it doesn't make sense, Airplay Mirroring is not supported because they think I'm too old of a computer, why should I upgrade to Mountain Lion? To get notifications on my Mac screw that... I want my money back.
