Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

Well somebody clearly as bright as you can surely see that the problem in this thread is that Apple made it NOWHERE near clear enough about the restrictions imposed with this update. And I'm sure someone with your unending brilliance would realize that it is said over and over in these nearly 600 comments that, even if it is a hardware restriction, they did NOT make it clear at ANY point from WWDC that it would not work. Yes, there is a moron here, and this post is a reply to him.

Yeah, I totally agree. Man I will tell you what... apple is starting to really make me second geuss their whole operation. Almost everything I own is apple and the terrible part is now looking at all of it as junk. Sure everything works great but these new updates that exclude products bought a year ago or even a month ago is just a terrible practice. I suppose Apple thinks they really got everything figured out. I suppose they really think I'm going to go out and buy a new Mac just for this feature. I think not apple. You make me sick. you should be ashamed of your self. Totally agree with you JCETHEEDGE. I agree with everyone on this thread.

This will probably get deleted... but it makes sense, and probably means NOTHING is going to happen.

    Apple has become GREEEEDY!

    Check article below...

    http://hothardware.com/News/OS-X-10-8-Mountain-Lion-Wont-Support-64bit-Macs-with -Older-GPUs/

...... Some older Mac models, including ones that are 64-bit capable, aren't invited to the Mountain Lion party, and it's likely because of the GPU. First, let's look at which Mac models made the cut:

         •          iMac (Mid 2007 or newer

              •          MacBook (Late 2008 Aluminum, or Early 2009 or newer)

              •          MacBook Pro (Mid/Late 2007 or newer)

              •          MacBook Air (Late 2008 or newer)

              •          Mac Mini (Early 2009 or newer)

              •          Mac Pro (Early 2008 or newer)

              •          Xserver (Early 2009).....

it's being reported (unofficially) that an updated graphics architecture intended to smooth out performance in OS X's graphics subsystem is the underlying issue."...... Mountain Lion apparently doesn't play nice with 32-bit GPU drivers, and while Apple could spend time and resources bringing older models up to par, the Cupertino company decided it was better off dropping support altogether. That's a tough pill to swallow for owners of Mac systems that are barely more than three years old.

To whoever may read this... while I am very upset I cannot use this feature.  I am laughing at all the people who are saying "well i'm done with mac now because of this".  Lets be honest we know its a greed and money issue and to sit here and think that Apple is the only one who does this is a joke.  How many times when I used a PC I had to go out and buy an anti virus protection program.  Then you hear that you can buy a Mac and basically never have to worry about a virus.  So you're telling me all that money spent on McAffee and all those other virus programs was a waste.  You're telling me Microsoft could have just worked a little harder and made it so there were no virus' possible.  See that to me is worth arguing about and getting upset about.

The other point I want to make is those complaining about he direction of apple.  While it does suck that it seems like they're not staying as loyal to the hardcore fan base... might be a tough pill to swallow but they don't care.  Loyalty is a joke except for the dog you own and the wife or husband you marry and to your kids.  How many people on here were probably fired or let go for financial reasons from the company that they poored their hearts and souls into.  The company didn't have loyalty towards you one bit.  Look at the landscape of the computer world there is still a huge population in the process of converting to an Apple computer.  When I bought mine in 2007 I was sitting in my college study area with 20 other laptops around and none of them were Mac's.  Now look at the college landscape... everything is Mac.  Look at the new commercials they have released on their website with the genius boy... they're not directed at the people on this forum there going after the population they don't have yet.  They want the non educated computer people to realize how easy Mac's are and how compatible they are with other apple products so that all those people out their with iPhones who probably have no clue the apple on the back of their phone was based on computers at one point will go out and buy their computer too.   I'd wait to say they don't know what their doing when clearly over the past 15-20 years they knew exactly what they were doing.

Last point to those who keep pointing out see this is why your quarters numbers were down make me laugh.  No their quarter numbers are down because everyone knows the new iPhone is coming out in a couple months wo why go buy one now.

After all this yeah still upset about Airplay not working... but boy am I in no ways running away from a company who so far in my books has made one mistake and that was this.  Which being honest isn't the biggest deal in the world.

Is the AppleTv a second or third generation AppleTv?  Also does it have version software of 5.0 at the minimum?

i understand your points and i do agree with most of your reasoning...However, i have a 3.5 yr old mercedes...spent a **** of a lot on it & it came out the next yr with bluetooth ability (hands free) for the phone, which it did not have when i got car...should i say **** with Mercedes or any other car comp that manufactures like that?

this is how marketeers work. this is how the economy regenerates itself

i DO think Steve Jobs understood the consumer in a way no other manufacturering maven ever has....enough to say..We loved Apple prior to Steve's loss...let's get it back to the Apple of Steve's eye...so to speak

Just wanted to add that I am to another disspointed customer. I read the news that ML supports AP mirroring and I promptly went out and got a ATv and upgraded to ML the next night.

I am a bit upset that this doesn't work...but oh well I will buy the third party app.

I'm more upset that this wasn't advertised by Apple or the Blogoshpere or any of the tech articles I read leading up to my purchase.

    Boo on you Apple!

L Tony... Communication Skills 101... Don't insult your audience in your opening remarks. The fact is, Apple did a poor job communicating that AirPlay Mirroring would not work on devices a year or more old. While it does appear to be on the Tech Specs tab, there are other places where limitations were expressed for ML's features, but make NO mention of this limitation.

    Specifically, please check out http://www.apple.com/osx/whats-new/

6 described functions there that have limited availability either due to hardware limitations or outside dependencies (eg. devices w/iOS 6) are CLEARLY FOOTNOTED with those limitations. Yet while AirPlay Mirroring IS described on this page, NOTHING is footnoted to describe AirPlay Mirroring limitations.

So hopefully you might come to agree that Apple did an excellent job hyping this functionality in Mountain Lion, but a POOR job in communicating its limitations.

And whether other sources (eg. cultofmac) may have had articles about the limitation is rather moot. It was Apple's responsibility to communicate limitations consistently and effectively. If they'd done so, I do't think so many Apple-lovers would be so angry. No?

Okay, now you can take foot out of mouth.

This is the first time I have ever felt cheated by Apple. CHEATED. There is obviously no reason why my 2.53 GHz Core 2 Duo with 8 GB of DD3 should not be able to take advantage of AirPlay Mirroring... considering I'm using AirPlay to stream the Vergecast's video-feed to my Apple TV RIGHT NOW. Literally as I type this. Apple... what are you thinking? You are going to sell me a $20 piece of software with an advertised set of functions, functions that you demonstrated on no less than three occasions, and use it as an opportunity to up-sell me? Really? You want me to upgrade from my $2,500 MacBook Pro to another $2,500 MacBook Pro because I am a generation behind? This is your plan to ‘delight’ your customers and cultivate a relationship with your fans? FOFF.
