Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

So has anyone else noticed that Apple just added Hulu Plus to Apple TV? It just appeared in the menu today.  I know that's one of the big reasons that many of us were looking forward to AirPlay mirroriing. I still wish I could mirror for many other reasons, but at least that's something.

Nope. Not buying this limitation Apple. OK, so I get that you think we all need GPU hardware H.264 encoding to make this go, but as many have already said, Air Parrot is doing it. So, at least for desktop machines (see below), there is absolutely no valid reason to not have this ML feature enabled on a broader scope of "older" platforms. I'm running a mid-2009 iMac with a quad-core i7 clocking at 2.8 GHz. Be glad to let one of those cores that is sitting mostly idle take the load for mirroring.

(Why not non-H.264 GPU enabled MacBooks? Should be users choice, but the load on those machines is going to make them warm up pretty good and put a pretty good draw on the battery. But again, should be users choice.)

Solved my own question for anyone who run into the same prob. I assumed that I already had the latest mountain lion OS since I bought my iMac couple of days ago (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4). I was wrong... Got my redeem code for a free upgrade (Mac OS X 10.8) and now works great.

I agree, there should be an update to ML (a free one please) that allows older Macs to airplay under the user´s  choice, letting the costumer know that it will perform better or worse depending on the model we own if thats the issue. If a third party app can make the job then Apple is totally capable of coming up with a more integrated solution.

    Hey fitzpatty

I read somewhere in this same discussion that somebody got a refund and still kept Mountain Lion. You should give it a try there is nothing there to be lost more than what already is. Good luck!

If you do request a refund on mountain lion and get it, you are allowed to keep the OS installed.  But be warned, you will get no updates for the software.

Which is a security risk. Louis, do you happen to know how to do a downgrade back to Lion? Not sure whether freshly installing Lion and restoring my data from Time Machine would work because Mountain Lion did some Backups already to my Time Machine disk.

As suspected ML has a fair few issues that are slowly being shaken out. Battery issues, drag and drop, sleep issues and overheating problems. These combined, with the Airplay fiasco, means that Apple should be looking to issue an update fairly soon. I've advised several users not to upgrade yet, as ML isn't delivering all it's promise yet. As with all upgrades it pays not be first. Mind you, the lack of Airplay on such a huge swathe of Apple laptops and desktops with this upgrade, when there is a workaround, has used up a lot of good faith and trust. This action implies that just under the skin, there is a MS gremlin lurking.

Hi yes another very annoyed customer after having wasted time and money on mountain lion with the main attraction being airplay mirroring which won't work on my i5 2.4GHz Macbook pro. I will look at the legal remedies since it seems a case of misleading advertising.
