Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

Wow. As I write this I am already downloading ML. I would not have purchased it if I had known mirroring wouldn't work with my 2009 iMac. As I spent $3,000 on it in '09, I don't think I'll be purchasing a new one now. I am very pleased with Apple's products, but this is a major fail. I am extremely unhappy.

Like everyone else I also feel cheated. I was confortable with snow leopard but upgraded to ML only to use Airplay mirroring. I was about to buy apple tv just for this! IT DOESN'T MENTION ANYWHERE THAT OLD MACS WOULD HAVE AIRPLAY LIMITATION!!!

Install Airparrot. Its cheaper than ML and does what you guys are looking for. You can even try it before you buy it.

I also believe that some one smarter than me will figure out what flag enables airplay. Give it a few days... same story with airprint.

I feel so incredibly let down by apple over this. Apple, I *WILL NOT* be buying one of your new laptops (as lovely as they are) because you are so interested in raiding my wallet you can't offer support for my mid 2010 MBP.

I know there will be an anouncement (in response to the mounting fury) over why you can't offer air play support apart from with brand new computers. If air parrot have been doing this for ages, it will just prove you to be liars.

I really feel like you have no respect at all for the people who buy your products.

Been using http://airparrot.com/ to mirror my 4 year old Mac on my Apple TV for the past 6 months.

    It works very well.

It's another $9.99, but since Mountain Lion doesn't support older Mac's - this app does the job very well.

As anyone of you thought about doing the research first before making a purchase? This is suppose to be a support forum, not a complaint department.

    Yeah this is stupid.

Downloaded the trial for AirParrot, its a little choppy when trying to play a video, does the full version help the quality?

I purchased my Apple TV from an Apple store.  They ASSURED me that even though my Mac was 2008, that it could support Mountain Lion and therefore I would be able to us Airplay.  Repeat, THEY ASSURED ME IT WOULD WORK!  I would have never purchased Apple TV or Mountain Lion otherwise.  This is total BS and I am super ******.  I already had bought Roku for streaming netflix etc.  I ONLY bought Apple TV since I was told I would be able to mirror with Airplay as soon as I upgraded to Mountain Lion.  What a crock....  I want my money back for the Mountain Lion upgrade and my Apple TV too.
