Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

Every one that has an apple tv and an older mac feels cheated off course. I have an iphone, ipad, ipod, macbook pro, imac, apple tv .. and apple wants me to spend even more to get airplay mirroring enabled on my 2000 euro devises? What a f******g joke!

When they tell you at an actual Apple Store that it will work, I think that our complaints here are justified.  It is BS.

Not the point!! There is no reason for it not to work execpt for apple to make us spend even more money!  They should have been clearer .. it's like siri.. everybody knew it wouldn't be available for 3gs and 4 .. Why do you think everybody's so angry. We expect a company like apple to be upfront and clear in their communication.

I agree.  Add me to the list of unhappy ML apple customers!  I bought ML just for the airplay mirroring function...  My macs are too old!

This needs to be fixed! Not allowing such a little feature to be used is pathetic! I have been waiting months for this feature only to find out that I can't even use it because I'm a Mid 2010 Macbook. If you want people to buy new machines every year then you need to make them disposibles like ever other tech company on the market. You have a reputation of building a heck of a machine and one **** of a operating system. So we suggest support your product for the life us the machine don't strong arm people into buying new machines! I want my $20 bucks back!

I'm having the exact same issue casarboleda. I've been waiting weeks for this **** upgrade, and now it doesn't mirror. That was the only reason I wanted to get it in the first place!

Also add my name to the list of angry and dissapointed customers. Seriously misleading and I'm an avid apple fan, this was not made clear that it would not be supported on older macs. This is the prime reason I updated - formal complaint in the morning. Shame Apple, Shame!

    ABSOLUTELY BRUTAL!!!!

Apple not only didn't mention ANYWHERE that we couldn't use the mirroring with older MacBook Pros...I couldn't find it ANYWHERE in the marketing info for Mountain Lion.

Total on purpose duping of consumers.  Apple....YOU NEED TO FIX THIS.

The fact that there is a $9.99 ap workaround is total confirmation that APPLE IS TRYING TO SCREW THEIR LOYAL CUSTOMERS!

I'm not normally a complainer, but I upgraded in large part for the mirroring.

It even says look for Airplay where possible in System Preferences

Advice for those disaffected customers in Australia. Lodge a complaint regarding this with the ACCC as I am about to do.

I'm another one that feels compelled to make my first comment here about this.

The main reason I bought Apple TV a month ago was because I knew I would be able to mirror my macbook eventually. The main problem with Apple TV is lack of content and finally it looked like you were going to be get some decent use out of it by being able to mirror your mac...but no. I'm really disappointed. I've been using Mountain Lion for a few hours now and can't see any point in upgrading except for gaining a notes and reminders icon.
