Q: Mountain Lion AirPlay Mirroring (iMac to AppleTV) Not Working

Mountain Lion successfully installed on my iMac.

AppleTV sucessfully networked with my iMac (at least where iTunes and iPhoto are concerned.)

But AirPlay icon is NOT appearing in my menu bar. Any clues as to why this is?

In System Preferences, I've checked "Show mirroring options in the menu bar when available" but still nothing.

Below is a screenshot of my menu bar. Thanks in advance!

    My point, doggie,

I'll assume that's a typo, you couldn't really be as unpleasant as you sound, could you?

Well, first, since AirPlay is by name over the air no cable is going to allow you to do that.

As far as output by wire an HDMI adapter and sound cables will get you picture and sound.

    ??

    Uhhh,yeah.  Air Play =AIR

HDMI... Cable...if your computer(not iMac) has an HDMI receptacle. And apparently. A previous post said the same was true of their MacBook, though I don't have one and never will at this point.

"You don't know much do you? Or are you a troll. I've connected my old Powerbook even to my large TV to stream. You can also do it on your Mac or use the larger display as a second monitor. So what is the problem? Or do you even know?"

YOU MEAN AS PLEASANT AS THAT?

You have no idea what you are doing that is quite obvious, you do not need an HDMI connector on a Mac to use HDMI (apologies is this is hard for you)

But as you are extremely unpleasant.

    Bye

Okay on the phone with apple care now re: my mid2010iMac with no AirPlay Mirroring capability and no HDMI port as an OBVIOUS means to connect.  Mid 2011 and later models DO have HDMI ports. The rep said there are some third party programs you could buy but NOTHING APPLE PROVIDES THAT CAME WITH THE CAPABILITIES OF MY COMPUTER ,A--WIPE!

I paid $30 for FireCore jailbreak (which they said was legal). I never got it to work and I'm done with 3rd Party.

So look in the mirroe before you say someone else doesn't know what they're talking about!

What does jailbreak have to do with a Mac?

Oh that's rich.  my iPad won't open the link and on my windows laptop it's just an empty box I can't click on.  and when I typed the whole address in my address bar I just get the apple  help page saying "is there something we can help you with"?

yeah, I missed something really obvious.

    Wow!

If I could jailbreak the apple tv I with the Fire Core Program I could have been able to stream from the Mac to the ATV, at least, if not directly from the browser to the screen. I tried at least 5 or 6 times and I could never get it to work and had to keep resetting the ATV .

For the love of God, look further back in the posts and you'll see that I'm as irritated as the next person about this. So much so that I've sold nearly all my Apple gear, however all of this petty arguing is just embarassing and childish!

Why in the world with AirParrot available would you try to jailbreak the Apple TV?

Fire Core is just another Air Parrot.  It didn't work so I'm not paying for another 3rd party app.  I have heard lots of complaints about inconsistency with Air Parrot as well.  I just want a bona fide program that is supported by Apple and is SUPPOSED to work with the product.

For the love of God why would you be that irritated? Intel introduced QuickSync with their newer chips. Hardware manufacturers customized their systems by writing code between Windows and the chipset to allow OTA mirroring. If you had a PC with chipsets prior to that, that did not have Quicksync, then you did not get that feature. And even if you upgraded to Windows 7 or Windows 8 you still did not get that feature.

If you sell all your Apple gear and buy all PC gear, and then whoever you buy from (let's say HP) releases a newer model with a new Intel chipset, say an upgrade to Quicksync that allows OTA 3D, and your model will not run it, and there is a Windows update that still won't let you run it (because it is a HARDWARE upgrade) are you going to sell all your PC gear?
