I have a macbook pro running on leopard. I want to upgrade to mountain lion. My friend told me that I can't upgrade directly to mountain lion and that I have to buy the other previous versions before I can upgrade to mountain lion. Is this true? Please advise.

You need to go through at least Mac OS X 10.6 and 10.6.6 to get to Mountain Lion. Mac OS X 10.6 must be installed from a DVD; 10.6.6 and 10.6.8 are free from there.
