The app store says that Mountain Lion is incompatible. Not sure why. I have 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual Core Intel Xeon processors. I have 8 GB of memory free and over 800 GB of storage free. Can someone explain?

Our Mac Pro 1.1 models can not run the kernal in 64bit due to the EFI32 firmware and therefore have been remaindered - We are stuck a Lion....

Click the Apple icon in your menubar, select About This Mac, then More Info.
Right under the bold Mac Pro title will be the build period.
So the mac pro 1.1 64 bit computers can use Lion but Not Snow Lion... correct? Will this ever change do you know of?

If you're running Lion, it should, where my iMac shows it's an early 2009 design:
But a Mac Pro 1,1 is probably an August, 2006 model. I don't find an article that connects the model number to build period for Mac Pros, but plug your serial number into this site. It should show it.
Yes, I have Lion, but it doesn't show what you have. According to mine... It shows as 15-inch Core 2 Duo.
Its model Identifer is MacBookPro2,2.
Also, I tried this link this site and it came up the same result.
Oh, sorry, this thread is about Mac Pros, not MacBook Pros.
According to http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4132, no date is specified for a MacBook Pro 2,2, but it's clearly earlier than 2008. The Mountanin Lion specs say it must be mid/late 2007 or newer.
Try this site. It's not an Apple site, but seems accurate, and may show the build period.
Or call the online Apple Store (1-800-My-Apple).
Have you tried to purchase Mountain Lion? It shouldn't let you buy it if your Mac isn't compatible.
I can't recall when I purchased my my MacBook Pro. Guess I will stuck with Lion.

It's not the date that you purchased it, it's the date that the model was introduced. In your case, that would be October 2006, see below:
