I have just installed Mountain Lion. In 30 minutes of using it, I have been logged out to the login screen roughly 12 times. All at completly random times. This is very vexing as this will make a completely unworkable environment.
Is anyone having the similar problem!? What could the issue be?
Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)
So bad news all around is that i just did a full clean drive erase and clean install of Mountain Lion... and I am still having the same issue.
I've got work to do, so looks like time to restore to my old Lion system from back up.... will have to install Mountain Lion on an external to play with when I have time.
If anyone else has this problem, please let me know.
Q Manning.... you're the first other person I've heard with the issue. Mine can happen in the middle of typeing this message, doesn't seem to relate to any actions I'm doing.
What is your system? Wondering if it is a compability issue with my tower?

I have a suspicion this has to do with the Gatekeeper stuff. It just happened when an app that's not from he Appstore wanted me to update.

Doubtful it has anything to with Gatekeeper as i turned that on and off and it changed nothing.
We are both using the same processor, so I assume there is a compability issue.
The question is - does Apple even see this? How do we let them know of the problem so it can be remedied sooner rather than later?
I also have a Mac Pro, not sure what year, but 2008 sounds about when I bought mine. Yes, I have the same issue as you, ML logs me out randomly. Today it has logged me out maybe 10 times. Apple needs to fil this.
I checked now my configuration. My Mac Pro is a late 2009 model, 16 GByte RAM, two 2.93GHz Quad-Core Intel Xe, 2x NVIDIA GeForce GT 120 512 MB. I have 1 TB drive original with the machine, and 3 drives at 3TB each.
Seems we all have a couple things in common... we are all running 8-core power macs with multiple graphics cards.... very few people have the need to run multiple graphics cards, and i'm willing to bet this isn't a coincidence.
I'm having a huge problem with Active Directory. Our AD server is set to lock an account after three failed login attempts.
It appears that for some reason when logging in to the network from the login page, you get two tries before being locked out instead of three. Also, when logged in, then logging out and then trying to log back in again, you get one try.
There also appears to be a random, system-wide, issue when authenticating using Active Directory credentials, particularly with modal boxes asking for authentication. Sometimes it will work, other times it will lock the account on the first try EVEN WITH THE CORRECT INFORMAITON.
I've been calling IT all day having them reset my password. They'll never let Mountain Lion in the building if this continues.

i'm sorry to hear of your issues... but this seems to be another thread entirely.... not related to the issues we are having here.
I tried a clean install of Mountain Lion, then migrated Lion account over. Same problem as first attempt.
FYI: 12-core Mac Pro with two graphic cards....
Ok, this appears to be an issue with the graphics card. What is your graphics card?

Same problem here - I'm right in the middle of something and BAM I'm suddenly at the login screen. Three times so far.
I filed a bug report after the first time it happened......
