Q: Mountain Lion keeps logging user out...

I have just installed Mountain Lion. In 30 minutes of using it, I have been logged out to the login screen roughly 12 times. All at completly random times. This is very vexing as this will make a completely unworkable environment.

 

Is anyone having the similar problem!? What could the issue be?

Mac Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.7)

    Seemed to avoid the issue when running in safe mode... but created a new user and still had it log me out to the login screen.

     

    Where next? Guessin a clean instal would be the next move, but gonna be really frustrated if that doesn't do the trick after all that work.

    Shutdown.

    Start while holding the Alt(option) key.

    From the window that opens choose to start the Recovery Disk.

    Reinstall Mountain Lion.

    This should not change your apps and data (but always have backups).

    Check your energy saver settings.

     

    I have mine set to put the screen to sleep after 3 minutes of non use/ When I awaken the screen, I have to log in. It's a security thing to stop snoopers peeping at your stuff

    Will reinstalling (AGAIN) from the recover disk be better than a 2nd reinstall of Mountain Lion?

    Its not just going to sleep, its force logging me out and quitting all my apps in the middle of me working. In fact, this is the second time i've typed this message becuase it forced me out in the middle of writting the last one.

    Sounds like it serisouly needs that power nap

     

    Personally, I perform a fresh install so that a new copy is downloaded and start from scratch. Not ideal but if you have a clean install with only the OS, if the issue has gone, you know it's not the OS causing it.

    I'm using a 2012 Mac Pro desktop and what I found was that firstly none of my icons (such as drives) were showing up on the desktop, so I went into finder Preferences and noted that show these items on the desktop was all ticked. Unchecked / Checked one of them and suddenly (behind the Preferences window) all my usual desktop items appeared.

     

    OK. Now I moved to a different Space. All icons gone.

     

    Back to Preferences and repeat. Moved to another Space and they disappear again.

     

    Roughly every 20 minutes Finder restarted automatically, all my apps quit and then restart again.

     

    I tried deactivating many apps, but to no avail.

     

    So I'm back on Lion.

    Yeah i'm about to go back to lion myself for now... can't work with everything closing randomly. How did you downgrade back to lion? From a backup or did you do a clean install on a drive?

    If you got Lion from the Mac App Store, it should still show in your purchase list. You should be able to download it again from there.

    Mountain Lion not allow you to open the Lion installer and downgrade. I burned the installer DMG onto a disc after I purchased it, but I am unable to install back to lion. A clean install would be the only option to downgrade.

    Is your account an Active Directory account, not local?

     

    Just curious, as I had this happen to me, none of my preferences were saving - and there was a lot of grousing about my Keychain going missing.

     

    Once I got Server loaded and AD running, I had to login as root (after resetting the password), delete the new local account that the install wizard created, and then log back in with my old AD account, and everything has been fine since.

    if you're machine comes preinstalled w/ Lion you CAN go back to lion. Just perform an internet recovery option command R.

     

    Ok so that's a system wide issue if its happening on a second user account. Sounds like a corrupt OS. going back to Lion is not fixing it, rather a clean install of ML will. you can migrate your data at a later time

    I am unaare of what Active Directory is... therefore I am assuming this doesn't apply to me. thank you thou.

    Kisuke... I have a 2008 Mac Pro, I think it came with Leopoard or something of that nature.

     

    Either way, I have just wiped my drive and dont a fresh install of Mountain Lion, crossin my fingers as migrating my data is quite the tedious task.
