Q: Mountain Lion keeps logging user out...

I posted several weeks back on this issue.  I filed a bug report with Apple on the issue.  They contacted me a few weeks ago asking that I send in crash reports and logs from my system.  They quickly identified and said the problem was one being worked on.  I'm assuming the near release of 10.8.2 will address this issue.  The developers forum has been reporting this version has corrected the battery drain issues, etc.. and many have said the delay in it's release is to address all issues such as the one posted here.  I personally upgraded my video card as it was simply time for me.  My work is graphic intensive so it made sense.  However, if you can wait and simply turn off spaces for the next week or so, I suspect the next update will take care of the issue.  When Lion was released it took a couple months to get it rock solid.  Patience and it'll be worked out and better for the trouble.

For those just seeing this thread, and not wanting to read all 10 pages.. the issue has been isolated to users with multipe graphics cards (one/multiple monitors plugged into each card)... single cards with two monitors are not experiencing this.  Random, and frequent kernel panics are occuring when you access mission control, or change spaces while using multiple monitor/multiple graphic card combinations. 

Others on this thread are experiencing issues with their settings being incorrect, and some similar kernal panics, however the original issue here has been identified by several here, as well as acknowledged by Apple. 

To avoid reading this entire thread, I will sumarize again to make it simple...

If you have two graphic cards, with one or more monitors plugged into each, and use Spaces with Mountain Lion 10.8 and 10.8.1, and are experiencing random logging out and shutting down of your applications... your system is experiencing a kernel panic based on a software bug Apple is currently working to fix.  Below is a summary of the work arounds others and myself on this thread have used in order to remain productive while we wait for Apple to fix the bug...

• Systems with cards that allow multiple montiors - plug monitors into single graphics card (no need to remove other card).  If you have two Apple Displays that require Mini Display Ports, your card will need to have two ports. For older cards such as GeForce GT120 (which only has one Display port, and one Dual Link DV.. you'll need to use monitors that support this, or go with a single monitor.)
  
  
• Another solution here that I have not tested but seems to work.. go into Expose and delete all Desktops except one.  This will essentially keep the system from using Spaces.

I was fortunate enough to have an ATI 5770 at home which I could swap out at the office (swapped out two GT120s for the one 5770 giving me the ports I need on a single card).  This allowed me to connect my two Apple LED Cinema Displays and keep up my workflow..

Thank you for that post!  Well phrased - hopefully those coming here will understand what the original problem is and will keep on topic.  Here's to hoping that 10.8.2 fixes our problems - I miss using my third monitor!

I upgraded to 10.8.2 and, tentatively, it looks like that's solved the problem.  Let's hope this holds up over more extensive testing!

Upgraded to 10.8.2 as well. I setup/turned on my spaces again and so far it seems fixed. Before I would have been logged out pretty quick. This is with 2 video cards and three monitors.

Over the last few weeks I've also had a few hard crashes / full restarts on the same machine. Hopefully that's fixed too, however it mayb not be related to primary issue in this thread.

Ok, upgraded to 10.8.2.  Hooked up my 3rd monitor and will try it today... very hopeful!  Let's keep each other informed!

I have a MacPro and one graphics card, with 2 monitors on same card. I upgraded to 10.8.2 and I still have the problem :-( When I login and start to use spaces, suddenly the screen goes blank and I am logged off. The only way to get back is to power off, remove one of the monitors and power on again. It seems the 10.8.2 update didn't change anything for me...

Upgraded to 10.8.2 ...... aaaaaand it didn't help !!! Merely a few hours later I experienced the windowserver crash with consequent auto logging out process.  A real PAIN !!! Btw on my attached monitors(3), I can only see my foto's in iPhoto as thumbnails, they wopn't enlarge. If however I drag the iPhoto screen to my laptop screen, this works flawlessly. Does anybody els have this bug too ??

Sorry to hear that it didn't help you. I also had this problem, and I gave some traces to Apple when they called me about it. This update helped me, i haven't seen any logouts since I upgraded.

I am happy to say that 10.8.2 did seem to resolve the problem for me. It's been a few hours without issue. On earlier versions the problem would have happened several times within a couple minutes.

Crossing my fingers that this really did solve the problem.

Went all day with no random log outs on 10.8.2 (with my 3rd monitor hooked up) and using spaces in my workflow!  Amen!

Yep. Sadly, 10.8.2 did not resolve my issue. If I leave iTunes full-screen in another space, put my MacBook Pro Retina to sleep, and then wake it, I get the hard log-out problem about once every ten times. If I don't leave any apps in full screen mode, I don't get the hard log-outs.

Is anyone else *not* experiencing a similar issue after upgrading to 10.8.2 on a MacBook Pro Retina?

Does anyone have a support contact at Apple? I'd love to provide some sort of crash report so that they can get it fixed soon.

The MacBook Pros (Retina and non-Retina) all have two graphics cards -- one discreete and one integrated.
