I have a similar problem. I CAN play videos to the Apple TV through iTunes Home Sharing, but going to SYSTEM PREFERENCES --> DISPLAYS yields no evidence of that Apple TV for AirPlay. I'm on Ethernet directly into my Airport that serves as the wireless connection for the Apple TV. Why doesn't it work?
Try Airparrot (not tried it).
Hope Apple will consider ALL its customers and issue an update allowing everyone to use airplay mirroring...
Tried it again on a MBP w/Retina Display. It worked immediately upon boot-up. The AppleTV icon was already visible in the top bar and I bagan using it instantly. Works great. Quality is better than expected.
I suppose that my iMac is older than mid-2011.
That's some bullshizz.. im using a 17-inch, Mid 2009 & that was one of the reasons i bought it.. o well, im still enjoying some of the other features..
BOooo on that one apple...
Thanks Apple
I have an Early 2011 Mac Book Pro (13", 2.7 GHz i7), supposed to have AirPlay Mirroring capability per Mountain Lion Tech Specs, but I don't get the AppleTV icon, either. What gives? This was basically the biggest reason I bought Mountain Lion.
Mid 2010 macbook pro's have been excluded from airplay mirroring. I bought an apple tv just for this. Time to send it back.
For older Macs get AirParrot its actually better than Apples Airplay with a lot more options

Reactions seem mixed but certainly worth a shot with the free demo - what spec Mac are you using (or PC?).
AC
keep your apple TV, i fell in love with mine way before mirror feature.
I also am thoroughly p1ssed! My MacBook Pro is NOT old. This is ridiculous!!!!!
Thanks for the info, I wish this was mentioned on the Airplay section on the Mountain Lion Advertisment. I have a MacBook Air mid 2009 and I can not use the Air Play feature 😟
