Google "toolbar" has disappeared and "reader" has replaced it. How do I get my search bar back?

My google "toolbar" is gone. I updated some software, and now it has vanished. I have tried so many things, View>Customize, Restart Safari... none of it works. My toolbar was replaced with "Reader" I don't want reader, I want my toolbar back. Please someone help! Thank you.

That is just horrible! If I would have known that, I would not have upgraded it. How can they not be seperate??? What is Apple thinking? The google sidebar was much more convienent than this new Safari 6 is. I have been frustrated all afternoon becuase of this. I tried everything... I am really not happy! Apple, get your sh*t together!!

I think some years back there was a broser who had this combined url/search field, but discontinued it later...

Firefox and Chrome currenlty use a unified bar. If anything this is what we're trending towards. Separate bars are what's being discarded as the legacy feature, not vice versa:

This behavior will be familiar to users of Firefox's Awesome Bar or Chrome's unified search/address field, but it's new for Safari.

If you took the time to backup before you installed Mountain Lion you can, if not you will need to erase your installation and reinstall the previous one. This will wipe everything from your machine so make sure that you back it up first.

Why take a sledgehammer to the issue? Like I said to people who really want to go back to Safari 5, Apple makes previous software versions available on its downloads portal.:

If you really, really hate Safari 6: you can always download a previous version and install that. But remember, old versions of software don't just have different UI elements you might be more used to: they also will keep security vulnerabilities that may have been patched in newer versions.

Have you tried this method?

Why would I downgrade to Safari 5 when I'm perfectly fine wtih Safari 6?

I'm just letting people on this thread know that Apple makes downloads of their built-in apps available in the Support section of the site. You don't have to downgrade a whole OS just to roll back one app.

Do not suggest 'downgrades' unless you have tried them for yourself! Your suggestion may not work but will cause the OP to waste a lot of time and may end up with a reinstallation anyhow.

My method will work (I have tried)

That was before Chrome, so years back. I can't remember which one it was.

I guess that it wasn't implemented in Safari to improve usablilty, but rather due to pressure of marketing "new features" and maybe selling the keystrokes to google, so they can stalk you even without intention of using their search. Why else would Chrome market it as "awesome bar". What's so awesome about a search/url field...

Thanks for the helpful answers. I have one question you haven't covered. In Safari 5, if I knew an address (like say "www.espn.go.com", I could simply type "espn" in the url field and Safari would append the "http://www." and ".com" to make a complete address. Now I have to select from the dropdown menu to tell it if I am searching for "espn" or going to the url "www.espn.go.com". Is there a way to define a search versus an address entry without the the dropdown selection? In Safari 5 this was never an issue since searches were done in the search field, and addresses were input in the address field.

In actual fact, you can do this with Safari 6. I have used ESPN (since that is what you had in your question, and because its a website I have never opened before).

See the video below of Safari 6 apending the website address:

Significant utility has been removed by forcing one to use a unified addresa and search bar. Previously one could enter their search terms in the search bar and navigate, keeping a record of their search in the search bar and being able to easily track and revise the search terms to get the results one wants. Now after every search, the terms are reset with an address. Though they are availabe on for instance, the google search page, they go away after one navigates. This is incredibly frustrating and time consuming, and takes away import functionality that was prevoiusly avaible. Apples unilaterial decisions are getting more and more questionable. Perfect examples are Address Book and Calendar in Lion that are just a PITA to use now, compared to prior versions.

With the unified address bar, at least give us a choice.

Thanks Taser. I had to read through this entire thread to get to a post that zeroed in on the problem. You are exactly right as to why this "improvement" is so frustrating for so many people. Suppose I was searching "Russian history." I visit a few of the pages that come up in the search. Now suppose I wanted to modify that search by specifying "20th century Russian history." With the old arrangement, all I had to do was place my cursor in the search field before the worlds "Russian history" and add the words "20th century." Now, unless I'm missing something, I have to go through the following ridiculous steps: Highlight the url; hit delete, click on the magnifying glass, select my original search at which point it will appear in the omnibox, and only then can I modify my original search. Either that, or I have to hold down the back button, find the original search, select that, then modify the search.

For people who do a lot of research, this is maddening.

You are missing something, all you have to do is place your cursor in the search field before the words Russian History and type 20th Century, it is exactly as it was excpet that there is no longer a seperate search field.

Missing Something?, missing everything it seems.
